Roberts, son of a family of three, George A. and Emily was born in Maidehhead, England, on January 3rd, 1853 and died on January 4th 1922, at his home in Silver township, Cherokee county, Iowa aged 69 years and 1 day. At the age of three years he left England with his parents the family intending to make America their future home. On account of the ill health of the father however, they remained in this country but one year when they returned to their former home in England. Fifteen years later they fared forth again for America, the family locating at Cherokee; Iowa. Most of his life through the intervening years had been spent within the bounds of this county where he has contributed to it's growth and prosperity by being a faithful worker. At one time he was engaged in the dray arid ice business in Cherokee which business he was forced to quit on account of poor health. He was also a grading contractor and a mover of buildings and at one time he conducted a produce business in Cherokee. In 1891 he was united, in marriage to Tinnie Bugbee to which union five children were born, of whom four are still living, Ruth having died in infancy. Those living, are George Roberts of Cherokee, Nellie Gillette of Silver township and Ray and Helen Roberts at home. Besides his wife and children, he leaves five grandchildren, Donald and Glenn Gillette and Maxine, Charles and Dean Roberts. His brother; George may be surviving in England. The last letter received from him was during the bombing of London. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Established church of England. Ten years ago his health failed and for the past year he had been confined to his bed. His was the privilege of being associated with and a factor in the early development of this country. To have lived here for the past fifty years is to have known much of hardships and suffering, is to have seen it develop from almost a wilderness to it's present high state of Civilization. Many stories his tongue could tell were he still with us yet again.
