Description	:	Walter Slocum, son of Charles and Sara (Harper) Slocum, was born February 24, 1874. He married Gertie Graham, who was born February 14, the same year. Walter was in business with his father in Orient, Iowa, where they operated a general store. In 1905 Walter and family moved to Massena and established a general store under the name of The Slocum Company. He married Gertie Graham, who was born February 14, the same year. Walter was in business with his father in Orient, Iowa, where they operated a general store. In 1905 Walter and family moved to Massena and established a general store under the name of The Slocum Company. The store remained in business for 34 years, until they sold to Jerry Campbell in 1942. Mr. Slocum was noted as a civic leader. He was president of the school board when the wooden school was torn down, and the new modern brick building was constructed. He led a committee that for years conducted a two-day homecoming celebration. He was vitally interested in the Massena Fair, the annual semi-pro baseball tournament, and the early days of Chatauqua. Soon after arriving in Massena, he purchased the entire block north of the city park. Tennis and croquet courts were constructed to be used by youngsters in the area. Later, two lots were sold to George Cruise and Mrs. Guthrie. He passed away in 1932, and his wife in 1935. The Slocums were parents of five children: Ceceil, Pierre, and Ramona, who were buried in Orient, Iowa; Darrel who is buried in Massena; and Mrs. Haorld Maas (Yvonne) who lives in Alexandria, Minnesota. To show his love of nature, Walter requested that his tombstone be a large boulder. His wish was granted, and after his death, the large stone was obtained and placed on his grave. The Slocums were members of the Methodist Church in Massena.
