Wanda Jean Dettmer was born October 27, 1949 at Presbyterian Hospital, Waterloo, to Lawrence Carl and Glennis (Holm) Dettmer. She was baptized on November 13, 1949, and confirmed on April 7, 1963, both by Rev. V.D. Weidler at St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church, rural Waverly. Wanda grew up on a farm SW of Tripoli and attended Fremont #9 country school near her home through third grade, started fourth grade at Tripoli Elementary School and graduated from Tripoli High School on May 19, 1967. Wanda married Darwin Jeffrey Boldt on December 10, 1967, at Grace Lutheran Church Tripoli, with Rev. Arnold Koenegeter and Rev. George Gundel officiating. Darwin was drafted into the Army in April 1968. They lived in Columbus, Georgia through December 1968 while Darwin was stationed at Fort Benning. During this time, Wanda worked as secretary at the Ralston Hotel in Columbus. Three sons, Troy, Brett and Darin, were born from that union. They later divorced. Wanda was a member of Grace Lutheran Church until 1983 when she moved to Waverly. During these years she worked as a secretary at First National Bank and Bantam Division of Koehring (now Terex), both Waverly, and was activity coordinator at the Tripoli Nursing Home. On October 15, 1983, Wanda married Darrell Dean Kueker at Grace Lutheran Church, Tripoli, with Rev. Wm. Spencer officiating. Darrell legally adopted Troy, Brett and Darin on November 16, 1985. He died on June 1, 1989. After her marriage to Darrell and moving to Waverly, she became a member of St. John Lutheran Church and worked as a waitress at the Waverly Café, again at First National Bank, then Draft Horse Journal and St. John Lutheran Church. In August 1989, she became employed at Century Life of America (now CUNA Mutual), Waverly. On September 7, 1996, she married James (Jim) Earnest Petersen at Fontana Park near Hazleton with Rev. Phyllis Wolkenhauer of Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, officiating. Jim and Wanda moved to their current residence in April 2003. Wanda's CUNA Mutual position was eliminated in August 2003. She then worked at Security State Bank, Independence, until July 2007. At that time, she started part-time work at Meyer-Lincoln True Value, Oelwein and when that closed, she began two part-time secretarial jobs: Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Oelwein Area United Way. Jim and Wanda also started a catering business out of their home in 1999. Wanda's three sons and Jim's four children, Ron, Brandy, Cara and Shelby completed her family. Her happiest times were spent with her many family and friends, especially the grandkids. She deeply appreciated how all of Jim’s extended family were so accepting of her. Because she lived and worked so many places and was in so many activities through the years, as a former co-worker once said, "there are only two kinds of people in this world, those who know Wanda and those who are going to." Wanda used to sew and do other crafts but mostly loved to read, and always did lots of cooking and baking which she enjoyed sharing with others. She loved to entertain and never said "no" to anyone when it came to volunteering for church, community or work activities. She believed in "treating others as you want to be treated" and "if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours." She was formerly on bowling leagues in Tripoli and Waverly, a Sunday School teacher, a member of Grace Lutheran and St. John women’s groups, church councils and bell choirs, a scout leader and a former member of the Winnebago Council District Board, and a youth board member at St. John, Waverly. Wanda has served on the Board of Education and Church council at Zion Lutheran, Oelwein and as co-chair of the WELCA group. Those left to mourn Wanda's passing are her mother, Glennis Smith, Shell Rock, 4 sons, Troy (Ellie) Kueker, Oelwein, Brett (Angi) Kueker, Clarksville, Darin Kueker, Charlotte NC, Ron (Becky) Petersen, Carlisle, and 3 daughters, Brandy (Gerald) Hershey, Oelwein, Cara Petersen, Oelwein, and Shelby DeVolt, West Union, her 12 grandchildren, Cody and Kassy Kueker, Prior Lake MN, Colton Kueker, Clarksville, Ryan, Olivia and Andrew Petersen, Carlisle, Logan, Erica, Ryan, Adian and Jenna Hershey, Oelwein and Ristyn Stirewalt of West Union. She is also survived by 5 sisters, Judy Garner, Tripoli, Joyce (John) Lubben, Shell Rock, Karen (Rich) Milius, Tripoli, Linda (Will) Hamilton, Waverly, Connie (Dwayne) Sessler, Shell Rock, and one brother, Duane Smith, Sioux Falls SD, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, aunts and cousins, and many extended family members from her and Jim's previous marriages that are too numerous to mention but all know who they are. Wanda is preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, her father, Lawrence, on May 13, 1958; her second husband, Darrell, on June 1, 1989; her third husband, Jim on March 11, 2015, her stepfather, Merle (Bud) Smith on August 3, 2004; a sister, Diane, and twin brothers, Larry and Gary, in infancy; a granddaughter, Anna Carol Petersen on October 5, 2008; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
