Wanda was born December 27, 1921, in Chambers, the first child of Frank M. and Frances Marie (Snyder) Porter. On June 29, 1940, in Wayne, Nebraska, Wanda married Vernon L. Smith of Chambers. By letter dated March 29, 1943, Vernon was told to report to the Golden Hotel in O’Neill, for induction into the armed services. Read More	Wanda Marie Porter Smith December 27, 1921 ~ July 2, 2016 Wanda Marie Smith, age 94, of Chambers, Nebraska, went home to be with her LORD on July 2, 2016, in O’Neill, Nebraska. Wanda was born December 27, 1921, in Chambers, the first child of Frank M. and Frances Marie (Snyder) Porter. On June 29, 1940, in Wayne, Nebraska, Wanda married Vernon L. Smith of Chambers. By letter dated March 29, 1943, Vernon was told to report to the Golden Hotel in O’Neill, for induction into the armed services. Vernon was subsequently drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany and France. With Vernon in the Army, Wanda moved to Wichita, Kansas, and went to work on September 20, 1944 as a “Rosie the Riveter” for the Boeing Airplane Company. Wanda’s job became packing the parachutes for the pilots and crew of the various aircraft produced by Boeing. Via Western Union Telegram from New York, dated January 1946, Vernon advised Wanda: “ARRIVED SAFELY EXPECT TO SEE YOU SOON DON’T ATTEMPT TO CONTACT OR WRITE ME HERE LOVE= VERNON.” On January 9, 1946, Vernon was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Wanda terminated her employment with Boeing; they then resumed their married life in Chambers. Both Wanda and Vernon were active in their community and their church: Wanda served many years as a Sunday school teacher in the Memorial Baptist Church of Chambers. Wanda was also an avid china painter, decorator of ceramic art, involved in the Chambers flower club, a special occasions cake baker and decorator, and often employed as a house painter-interior decorator. Wanda is survived by: brother, Duane Porter (Eleanor); four sisters, Jeannene Reninger (Pete), Ruth Ann Clemens, Deanna Bellin, and Elinore Zimmer (David); many nieces and nephews. Wanda was preceded in death by: her father and mother; her husband, Vernon; and two sisters, Marian Porter and Evelyn Rowse. Funeral Service on Monday, July 11, 2016, at Memorial Baptist Church in Chambers, Nebraska. Burial in the Chambers Cemetery. Obituary information from Biglins Mortuary of O'Neill, Nebraska.
