PAYTON OF VAN METER DIES Had Lived Entire Life in Madison and Dallas Counties Van Meter, Iowa-(Special)-The community was shocked on Thursday afternoon to learn of the death of Warren B. Payton. Mr. Payton had been ill health for a number of years. On Thursday he was not feeling as well as usual, but his passing in the afternoon was sudden and unexpected. Warren Batelle Payton, son of John Fletcher and Charlotte Richards Payton was born July 20, 1871 on the Payton homestead southwest of Van Meter. All his life was spent in Madison and Dallas counties. On April 25, 1895 he was united in marriage to Jennie J. Dodge. To this union were born five children, Doris, Margaret, Mildred, Robert and Louise. Mildred departed this life on December 22, 1909, the mother Jennie, on New Years Day, 1924 and Robert on November 5, 1930. On January 8, 1925, Mr. Payton married Ada Trindle. Mourning his loss are his widow, Ada; three daughters, Mrs. Doris Clayton of Van Meter, Mrs. Margaret Kitchell and Mrs. Louise Morgan, both of Des Moines; a step daughter, Mrs. Christine Henry of Rippey, Iowa; two brothers, Will of Monrovia, California and Roy of Earlham; four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Clayton of Marysville, Missouri, Mrs. Rose Torode of Des Moines, Mrs. Emma Clayton and Mrs. Della Thornton of Van Meter and seven grandchildren. Almost thirty years ago Mr. Payton bought the home northeast of Van Meter where he lived at the time of his death. He was an active member of the Methodist church nearly all his life and served as a steward of that church in Van Meter for about twenty-five years. On January 9, 1908 he became a member of Fortitude Lodge No. 256 A.F. & A.M. at Van Meter. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. He will be remembered as a quiet, sincere man of character, with a host of friends, loved by all who knew him. He was a good man. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon conducted by the pastor, the Rev. C. F. Hand, assisted by the Rev. E. A. Elliott. Burial was in the Otterman cemetery. Published in the Winterset Madisonian, February 26, 1937.
