Davis died unexpectedly early Tuesday evening at his home on Palmer avenue. He was 75. Warren Francis Davis was born in Falmouth June 1. 1886, and lived virtually his entire life in the town where he was born. Last Thursday was the 50th anniversary of the day he went to work in the furniture store which his uncle had founded at Main and Shore streets in 1835. Within a short time he became active manager of the business, in which his sons were later to join him. He was one of three children of Francis P. and Geneva Cushing Davis, who came to Falmouth from Middleboro soon after their marriage in 1884. Francis Davis opened a general store in Quissett. Warren Davis grew up in Quissett and attended Lawrence High school. He studied at the Falmouth branch of Plymouth Business school and entered on a business career by going to Boston in 1903 to become an office assistant in Worcester Salt company. He returned to Falmouth to join the firm of W.C. Davis company on Feb. 1, 1912. William Cristy Davis had founded the business, which in 1889 moved to a new three-story building on the west corner of Main and Shore streets. Expanded and improved over the years and with a new, modern face turned to Main street, the building still serves. Furniture and funeral business traditionally went together. It was not until 1954 that the Davis firm dropped the funeral business. As a furniture store, its growth was steady over the years. In 1959 the firm expanded with opening of a new branch in Osterville, the Early American Shop. W. C. Davis retired in1915, and his nephew succeeded to active management of the firm. The business was incorporated in 1913. Warren Davis became treasurer and eventually succeeded his uncle as president. When he retired from active management of the business in 1960, two sons were ready to carry on. On April 10, 1918, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. Davis married Miss Ethel Engeborg Johnsen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Niels I.S. Johnsen. She was a Falmouth girl, and the wedding was a social event. The Rev. Frank H. Baker of First Congregational church performed the ceremony. The young couple established their home on Palmer avenue. Mr. Davis was elected a trustee of Memorial library in 1918, succeeding E. Pierson Beebe. During 43 years he was re-elected regularly at the end of each three-year term, and during the whole time he served the board as treasurer. He resigned as treasurer only recently, during the first week in January. Only once in 15 elections did Mr. Davis have opposition. Donald E. Hurford ran against him in 1954. Mr. Davis won by 581 votes. He also served as a town meeting member and was reelected last year, with the third highest vote among 21 candidates in Precinct Two. He was appointed to the finance committee in 1919 to serve a one year term. Loyal Church Member Mr. Davis was one of the oldest members of First Congregational church, where he worshipped as a boy and which he rejoined in May. 1912, when he returned to Falmouth after gaining early business experience in Boston. He served the church as auditor, advisor and collector. He served as deacon from 1939 to 1913. He played a leading part in the campaign that raised money for addition of the church wing, the Christian Education building, in 1957. He was clerk of the building committee and it was he who turned the first shovelful of earth when the construction started. Men's Brotherhood of the church held a memorial service before their meeting in the vestry, Wednesday evening. H.J. Pettengill and the Rev. Alexander L. Chandler presided. Eighty attended. He is survived by his wife and sons, Harold P. and Warren F. Davis Jr, and a sister, Mrs. Walter C. Donald of Delray, Fla. There are seven grandchildren; Sherry, Brian and Steven, the children of Warren Jr., and Robert Cristy, Harold Palmer Jr., William Warren and John Scott, children of Harold. The Rev. Alexander L. Chandler will officiate at funeral services at First Congregational church at 2:30 P M. today. Honorary pallbearers will be Cedric K. Hadley, Harry L. Crooks, Rawson C. Jenkins. Oscar J. Tapper. William G. MacDougall. Arnold W. Dyer, Alden H. Boothby and Ernest A. Sterling. The remains will be cremated at Forest Hills cemetery and interred in Oak Grove.
