Townsend Died Last Thursday Warren G. Townsend, perhaps one of the most widely known men in Brown county, died at his home northwest of Ainsworth last Thursday, August 27th, after an illness of several months duration. In fact he had been in failing health for the past several years, but his last illness was of comparatively short duration. Warren G. Townsend was born in Vernon Co WI, October 22, 1857. He received a common school education, and after attending the state normal began teaching in his native county. At the age of twenty-one he came west first locating in Hamilton Co NE, in 1871, where he followed teaching for two years. In 1880 he came to Brown Co, taking a homestead, which is now owned by Carl Hermsmeyer. When Brown Co was organized he served as the first county superintendent, filling the office for two terms. In 1894 he purchased 80 acres and later purchased 160 additional and this constituted the home place at the time of his death. Mr. Townsend was married November 15, 1887, to Miss Leona Hagerman. Five children were born to this union, one dying in infancy, and Glen R., died some years ago. He is survived by his wife and three children as follows: Mrs. Ed. Syfert, Lyndon E., and Lisle M., all of Ainsworth. Warren Townsend was a man of strong convictions, but always willing to lend a hand to the unfortunate or needy, as he had fought poverty and hardship in his younger days, when the country was practically a wilderness. He will be missed in the community in which he made his home for so many years. The funeral was held from the family home six miles northwest of Ainsworth Saturday afternoon, and interment was made in the Ainsworth cemetery. Contributor: Laura Mattingly - [email protected]
