Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. The Rev. David Sites officiated with burial in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege. The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege was in charge of arrangements. Warren Rapp was born on Oct. 28, 1916, in Kearney County, to Arthur and Esther (Backander) Rapp. Survivors include one son, Gerald, and his wife, Joan, of Grand Island; one daughter, Joyce Francis and her husband, Bill, of Funk; six granddaughters, Tammy Johnson of Grand Island; Brenda Bodfield and her husband, Paul, of Upland; Susie Boomhower and her husband, Tim, Lisa Fread and her husband, Bill, Marsha Young and her husband, Don, all of Lexington; and Glenda Sturgis of Omaha; one grandson, Junior Rapp and his wife, Tammy, of Grand Island; 12 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Nelson of Kearney; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Warren was baptized on Feb. 15, 1918, at Bethany Lutheran Church near Axtell and was confirmed on June 12, 1932 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. The family made their home on the family farm near Axtell. Later the family relocated to a farm north of Potter, then returned to Holdrege. Warren received his education at rural schools near Axtell, Potter and Holdrege. Following his education, he engaged in farming, helping neighbors and family. He later worked in Holdrege at Grainger Brothers, Sunglow Dairy and later owned and operated the Cozy Inn Café with his wife. On Aug. 2, 1936, he was united in marriage to Jessie Blanche Reagan at Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege and to this union two children were born, Gerald and Joyce. Warren and Blanche were married 62 years and lived their entire married life in the Holdrege area. Blanche preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 1998. Warren was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate on the destroyed USS Fanning, until his honorable discharge on Dec. 6, 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Martin-Horn Post 66, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving on the honor guard for several years and on the color guard for many area parades. Warren enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He loved the holidays and spent many hours decorating his home for Christmas. He enjoyed woodworking, making several Santa's, which were painted, for family and friends. He was an avid bowler on several different leagues. He loved animals and often adopted many homeless ones. In addition to his wife, Blanche, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tennis Rapp and his wife, Esther; one sister, Marie Nelson and her husband, Clarle; one brother-in-law, Delmar Nelson; one niece, Patty Giles; and one great-great-granddaughter, Raney.
