Surviving in addition to his wife and father are two sons, Jason Bedford of Blacksburg and David Bedford of Spartanburg; a stepson, Billy Tucker of Blacksburg; a stepdaughter, Julia Christina Smith of Blacksburg; a brother, Randy Bedford of Chester; two sisters, Patricia Martin of Blacksburg and Cherie Pressley of Spartanburg; and three grandchildren, Jade, Ashlyn, and Dustin Smith of Blacksburg. Services will be held at Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. --------------------------- Friends and school employees were shaken Tuesday morning when Cherokee Technology Center Director Ray Bedford collapsed at the school and died a short time later. Shortly before his death, Bedford, 57, was in a morning meeting with school administrators outlining his plans for the upcoming school year, superintendent Dr. Bill James said. The school's nursing instructors performed CPR on Bedford before the first-year director was transported to Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Bedford had played in a softball game this past Sunday and completed a 100-mile bike ride earlier this month to help raise funds for Iron City Ministries. James met with Cherokee Technology Center faculty and school principals Tuesday afternoon to inform them of Bedford's death and make arrangements for dealing with the difficult days that lie ahead. The school district will bring in additional guidance counselors to meet with students. Bedford was the job placement coordinator for 22 years at Cherokee Technology Center prior to being hired in July 2006 as the school's director. He came to the school after spending 12 years in management and administration in the textile industry with Milliken and Lowenstein. His efforts to help place students from vocational trades in post-secondary education and jobs contributed to the school maintaining an excellent rating on the state report card for the past six years. "Ray was a personal friend of mine. We went hunting together on Saturdays on property we leased in the Corinth community. He was a good man with a lot of interests in the community," James said. "His outgoing personality, leadership and guidance will truly be missed by co-workers, students and friends. The district administration and school board of trustees extend heartfelt condolences to his family and friends." Bedford is survived by his wife, Peggy, sons Jason and David, stepchildren Christy Smith and Billy Tucker and extended family. He was an active member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Blacksburg, an avid hunter, a volunteer firefighter with the CKC Fire Department, a State Constable and an expert bicyclist
