Warren was born on June 26, 1916, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Claude and Mary (McConnell) Cook. He graduated high school in Carroll, Iowa, in 1934. He continued his education at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, graduating in 1938. On Sept. 10, 1939, Warren married Johnnie Newsom. They had two children, Susan Cook and Robert Cook. Warren began his career with Montgomery Ward in 1938 at Hastings. He was transferred to York, Beatrice, Shenandoah, Iowa and Dennison, Iowa, before moving to Norfolk as assistant manager in 1944. From 1946 - 1962, he owned and operated Cook's Sporting Goods in Norfolk. Warren was extremely active in his service to his community. He served as the president of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce in 1948. Warren was elected to the Norfolk City Council and served six years before being elected as mayor and serving 1957 - 1963. While mayor, Warren appointed the first Chamber of Commerce Action Committee, established the office of administrative assistant to the city of Norfolk and started the city recreation program. Warren was recipient of the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award in 1963. He was appointed to the Nebraska Centennial Commission by Governor Frank Morrison in 1966. From 1972 - 1975, he served on the Norfolk Catholic School Foundation. Warren was elected to the board of directors of the Nebraska Public Power District in 1987. He retired from that position in 2005. Also in 1987, Warren received the Edward J. Vrzal Award. In 2001, Warren received the Distinguished Service Award from Northeast Community College, and the city named a park in his honor. Warren was very active in the Nebraska Livestock Market Association in which he held the office of executive secretary for Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. He later was the associate manager of the Livestock Marketing Association based in Kansas City, Mo. He was the president of the Livestock Market Digest and authored articles for its "Mashed Potatoes" column. From 1961- 1980, Warren gave more than 220 speeches for the Livestock Marketing Association throughout the United States. After the passing of his first wife, Johnnie, in 1994, Warren married Beth Voss on Jan 1, 1995. Warren had been a member of Kiwanis for over 25 years. He was a past member of BPOE. He was a member of the Methodist church for over 50 years and had been a member of Grace Lutheran since 2000. Warren is survived by his wife, Beth, his children, Dr. Susan J. Cook of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert M. Cook of Yuma, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Robert Cook, John Cook, Matthew Cook, Jennifer Cook, Ain and Jeffrey Cook, his step-children, Diane and Chuck Kribs of Bird City, Kan., Vicki Blattert of Lincoln, Sheryl Akerstar-Dalke, and her husband, David Dalke of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Dana and Karen Akerstar of Sarasota, Fla., and seven stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Johnnie and one sister.
