The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 7, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Military honors will be given by The American Legion, Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Warren Room was born July 16, 1922, in rural Lindsay, Nebraska to Alexander and Senie (Christensen) Rood. He attended public schools in Genoa and Columbus, graduating from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1939. He then attended an Aircraft Trade School in Los Angeles, California. After completing trade school he was employed by Consolidated Aircraft Company in Sand Diego, California. He then volunteered to join the Army Air Corp on October 25, 1942, and was honorably discharged on April 3, 1946. His foreign duty included serving as Radio Operator/Navigator while transporting personnel and supplies over the Himalayan Mountains (called the "Hump") from the Assam Valley in India to numerous locations in China and Burma. The most memorable was ferrying the Chinese 94th army into Shanghai for occupation duty while the Japanese were still in control of the airport and city. He was recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and one Asiatic Pacific Theater battle star. Warren married Betty D. Turner on October 12, 1944, in Seward, Nebraska, while home on furlough. Following his military discharge he was employed by Behlen Manufacturing Company in Columbus where he spent the majority of his employment career, retiring as Vice President of Manufacturing in 1980. He then started a consulting firm which provided manufacturing management services to industry, and was actively engaged in that activity through 1988. His professional affiliations included membership in the American Production and Inventory Control Society, the American Management Association, National Institute of Management, American Welding Society, and American Society of Tool Engineers. He also served on the Industrial Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce and on the Education Committee as a member of the Nebraska Association of Commerce and Industry. Warren participated in various community activities. He was a member and past President of the Jaycees and active on many United Way Drives in various capacities. He directed successful efforts for fluoridation of the Columbus water supply and was recognized as Outstanding Young Man of Columbus in 1958. Warren was a past member of the Columbus Board of Education and served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. He was Chairman of the Legislative Committee for four years and named outstanding Committee Chairman in 1965. He also served as Chairman of the Education Committee of the Chamber in 1966/67. In that capacity he appointed and served on a Sub Committee for the purpose of establishing Platte College, and subsequently served on the original Board and was President of the Charter Board. Warren also served in an advisory capacity to the Hastings Technical College. He was a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Eagles, Elks, O.F.C., SCORE, and past member of Optimists.
