He had been in very feeble heath for a long time, and in (unreadable) last was confined to his bed. What his suffering was from that time up to the last sad hours no pen can describe. The misery was constant, but through it all his otherwise strong constitution and indomitable will enabled him to keep (unreadable) unequal contest with the grim destroyer for nearly one hundred days. During his sickness there were times when he would rally and his sorrowing family would grasp at the faint hope thus given them, but it was of short duration. On Friday, the 8th inst. at 3 p.m. unmistakable evidence of the end was observed by his wife and children who surrounded his dying couch, and from that hour he was unconscious - the end being as our falling asleep. His aged wife has two daughters, Mrs. Riley and Mrs. R. B. Boyd; and two of his sons, Thomas J. and John H., were with him when the end came. His other son, George W., who is in Idaho, could not be present. The deceased was born May 15, 1809, in eastern Maryland. He was the eight child of a family of nine children. His father died when the deceased was three years old. He attended school during winters until he was 16 years of age, at which time he was apprenticed to learn the carpenter trade. After mastering it thoroughly he went to Richmond, Virginia, and was engaged in buying and selling horses with his oldest brother, James for many years. He went to Laurel, Franklin county, Indiana, In 1837, and in 1838 was married to Miss Mary A. Reed. Four children were born to them, all of whom are living. In 1844 he removed to Burlington, IA., where he followed his trade and was subsequently engaged in the lumber (unreadable), owning and running a saw mill. His brother Matthew having (unreadable) four miles north of Montezuma in 18?? (his family living in a log cabin in Montezuma) the deceased came up in October 1847, and purchased the claim of B. O. Paine, (Now the property of Poweshiek county as county farm). Early in the spring of 1848, he came on with his invalid wife and four children and began the work incident to frontier life upon the wilderness prairies. For several years he worked at his trade, and there are many buildings of the old time standing today which he built. The companion of his early life, the kind and affectionate mother and genial friend and neighbor, succumbed to that dread disease, consumption, and was the first white adult person buried in the county. She died April 21st and was buried April 23rd, 1850. He was married Mrs. Elizabeth Martin. There seven children born to them, all of whom died in infancy, except one - John, who with his aged mother, has remained at home. The deceased was engaged in the growing trade in Montezuma in co-partnership with John A. Myers. In 1860? he purchased the Harden Grove farm of the heirs of his brother Matthew and removed his family there. He improved and sold that place. Selling it in 1868? he bought the prairie upon which he improved the farm where he died. It would make a volume to tell of his works, his generous acts, his friendships, his hospitality, from those early days to the present time. For over fifty long years he has been identified with the growth and upbuilding of the county, and in various ways has added to its material prosperity. There are few men living more widely known in the county. It will require no sculptured monument to remind us that he has lived among us; it will require no words dictated by a heart made sad with sorrow at this time to remind his old neighbors and friends that he was unassuming, noble and generous; that he was honest in his dealings with his fellow-men; that he was respected and honored alike by his family and all who knew him, and that, when the flame of life went out, after a life of nearly fourscore years of honest, upright associations, a good man has gone from among us. Neither can any words be transcribed to express the sincere attachment and deep sorrow of his children and grandchildren and that his aged companion, whose able steps are "trembling upon the brink.: But while we shall know that he was only passed on before that he is at home in that silent bivouac where so many of his friends have gone before him."
