Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Iowa Wava LaVaun Smith Gries, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa. She was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Greenville, Iowa, to Marty and Stella DeShane Herrin. She received her early education attending a country school south of Ruthven, Iowa, and attended high school in Laurens, Iowa. She married Maurice Smith on Aug. 12, 1939, in Laurens. They resided in the Spencer area until 1957, when they moved to Gilbert. While living in Gilbert she worked as a seamstress for Cluett Peabody, a shirt manufacturer. In 1974, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. After Maurice’s death in 1976, she returned to Spencer. She married Gene Gries on March 23, 1982. The couple lived in Spencer, working at various businesses. Wava was an avid bowler and also loved to fish and crochet. Survivors include her husband, Gene, of Spencer; a daughter, Maureen (Harold) Olson, of Hoyt Lakes; a son, Steven (Shirley) Smith of Iron; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; an aunt, Maggie Blair, of Spencer; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Herrin of Spencer and Mary Beth Johnson of Hamilton, Mont.; and relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Maurice Smith, in 1976; and a brother, Harold Herrin.
