He was born March 24, 1915, in Henry County to Horace and Edith Barrett Shafer. He worked at Northrop Aircraft Corp. in Englewood, Calif., before returning to Henry County, where he retired from farming. He was a member and elder of the Chicago Corner Christian Church of Hagerstown. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lois Kimmel Shafer, whom he married Dec. 16, 1937; one daughter, Vicki Vestal of Hagerstown; one grandson; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; three sisters, Naomi Baker of California, Marjorie Gauker of Hagerstown, and Denise Russell of Muncie; two brothers, Daniel Shafer of Centerville and Dean Shafer of New Lisbon; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Fredia Holaday of Hagerstown; and a brother, Merle Shafer of California. A private service will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at Brick Cemetery in Hagerstown. There will be no public visitation. Main & Frame Funeral Home, New Castle, is in charge of arrangements.
