Description	:	An attempt to crash land in the sea instead of releasing bombs from his disabled plane and thereby endangering the lives of his fellow Americans cost the life of Second Lieutenant Wayne E. Cunningham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cunningham, according to a letter received by the parents from Lt. Cunningham's commanding officer. . . . It may be of some small comfort for you to know more fully exactly what happened. "Wayne was scheduled to take off on a divebombing mission from Lingayen Air Field, Luzon, Philippine Islands. He taxied out to take-off position and halted at the end of the strip to check his engines. The tower told he was clear to take off and as he went down the runway, his left engine began to pour out black smoke. Just as he left the group, the smoke turned to a white color and a few seconds later the whole engine burst into flames. "Realizing his predicament, Wayne headed out to sea with the evident idea of making a crash landing on the water. If he had released his 1,000-pound bombs at the end of the strip, he might have killed men working on the planes parked in the revetment areas so he elected to take the alternative. "A minute later a rescue plane hovered over the spot but could find no race of the plane. Your son's body was recovered the next day. He was buried with full military honors on April 27 in U. S. Air Force Cemetery No. 1, Santa Barbara, Luzon, Philippine Islands. [From the Ames (Iowa) Daily Tribune, June 7, 1945.] Lt. Cunningham's remains were reinterred in Ames, Iowa, in 1949.
