Description	:	Wayne Lester Reed departed this world on January 11, 2017 at John Muir Cardiovascular Institute in Concord, CA after a brief struggle with heart failure. He was born to Escar and Ethel Reed at Bayside on October 13, 1934. Read More	Wayne Lester Reed departed this world on January 11, 2017 at John Muir Cardiovascular Institute in Concord, CA after a brief struggle with heart failure. He was born to Escar and Ethel Reed at Bayside on October 13, 1934. In his youth Wayne was President of Future Farmers in high school and worked at the Giacomini Ranch in Ferndale in the early 1950s and traveled the State Fair circuits with the Giacomini family prized cows. He graduated Eureka Senior High School class of 1952. He attended Humboldt State until 1955 when he joined the Army for the G.I. Bill. He completed his Basic training at Fort Ord, CA, schooled in dental laboratory at San Antonio, TX, and then traveled by train to St. Louis, where he fulfilled his Army commitment. Wayne lived in Eureka his entire life, except for those 3 years of Army service at St. Louis, MO where he met his beloved Irish lass Margaret O'Driscoll. They married in St. Louis on September 13, 1957. He was honorably discharged from the Army on January 10, 1958, and they returned to Humboldt County across Route 66. They also lived briefly in Brookings, OR but he happily relocated back to Eureka. Wayne was employed most of his adult career in the local banking community until 1982, and thereafter at Winco Foods until November 1999 when a brain injury left him disabled. As a husband and dad, Wayne was active in Boy Scouts, 4-H, Pop Warner Football, EHS Boosters for the renovation of Albee Stadium, building floats in several Rhody Festivals, and he served as Governor of Moose Lodge, Grand Knight of St. Bernard's Knights of Columbus, Navigator of the Knights 4th Degree. He and his sons worked with the parish community to restore the "halfway house" on G street in the early 1970's. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents Escar Cecil and Ethel (Hull) Reed, his older brother Glenn and and Glenn's wife Carleen Reed, and by his first born son Sgt. Eugene Joseph Reed, Army Ret. He is survived by his devoted wife Margaret of 59 years and his 6 remaining children and their families: Lt. Col. Darla (Polk) Reed, Army Ret., Michael (and Nancy) Reed, Patricia (and Steven) Ponder, Brian Reed, Letha Reed Payne, Maj. John Reed, Army Ret. (and Michelle Ross Reed), Pamela (and Ben) Catlett; grandchildren Kylie, Erin and Kevin Reed, Breana, Caitlyn and Nicolas Ponder, Rachel and Natalie (Ross) Burns, Holden and Griffin Catlett. Wayne generously offered temporary housing to many people over the years, including 6 exchange students between 1975 - 1981, family friends, foster children and others in need of shelter or comfort. Wayne is remembered as the quiet presence to the innumerable families who relied on Margie's Daycare from 1966 to her retirement in 2002 when she devoted her life to his care. Wayne was a man of extraordinary allegiance, faith, and pride in his wife, family and home. He converted to the Catholic Church in 1956 and lived his quiet faith to his last breath. One of his greatest accomplishments was restoring the Victorian home on H Street purchased in 1967. His proudest legacy is the success demonstrated by his children and grandchildren he and his wife raised. His only disappointment was that all of his children left his beloved Humboldt County and travel was increasingly difficult due to his health challenges these last 17 years. Wayne was an avid hunter and fly fisherman, a talented woodworker, an enthusiastic camper and outdoorsman. He enjoyed cross-country travel, square dancing, round dancing and ballroom dancing. Proficient in the kitchen, he enjoyed creating artful meals in the kitchen and around the campfire. He loved family events and creating culinary masterpieces with his son Brian, who succeeded in hotel and restaurant hospitality. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in his honor, Thursday, January 19, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church and burial immediately following at St. Bernard's Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their most heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Paul Wyndham, the Emergency Medical team at St. Joseph's Hospital, Eureka, including Dr. Michael Palmer, the local fire department and emergency responders, the team at the Eureka Veterans Administration & Clinic, many in-home care professionals over the years, and most especially Denise Dempsey, helpers Kandice and Lisa for their devoted daily care, Kaiser Antioch, Sutter Delta Antioch, and last but not least the extraordinary care at John Muir Cardiovascular Institute at Concord, CA where Dr. Gilbert Chang (Sutter Delta/John Muir) who canceled his vacation to provide the care in Wayne's last few precious days. Also thanks to the Nancy (Timm) Reed family for hospitality as the family gathers from distances to celebrate their Dad. Margaret expresses her deepest sincere appreciation for her sons and daughters who made themselves available with care and comfort during all of these challenges.
