Description	:	When Wayne Lewellyn Storrs was born on 9 June 1891, in Mansfield, Connecticut, his father, Lewellyn Jennings Storrs, was 23 and his mother, Louise (Gardiner) Storrs, was 21. Read More	When Wayne Lewellyn Storrs was born on 9 June 1891, in Mansfield, Connecticut, his father, Lewellyn Jennings Storrs, was 23 and his mother, Louise (Gardiner) Storrs, was 21. He had one sister Bernice G. (Storrs) Knapp, born 4 October 1895. Wayne graduated from Connecticut Agricultural College (now called University of Connecticut) in 1909 with a degree in Dairy and Poultry Husbandry. In 1910, he married Lenore May Laubscher of Rockville, CT, daughter of Martin and Lillian M. (Pease) Laubscher. They had one son Stanley Lewellyn Storrs on 4 November 1911. A few years after graduating, Wayne took over the family farm on Spring Hill and kept a dairy herd of 125 head, 72 hogs and on his 300 acres, raised potatoes, hay and corn. He also hired out with his farm equipment and said “he worked for everybody around here.” He managed the family farm until 1949, when he turned the farm over to his son, Stanley. Stanley graduated from C.A.C. in 1931 with a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture. In the 1930’s, Stanley married graduate nurse Furniss Gordon of Alabama, daughter of James Kennedy Gordon and Mamie Fleming (Haynes) Gordon. Just before Stanley’s death in 1965, the farm was sold to the state with the Storrs retaining the right to live in the family farmhouse. At age 53, Stanley died in Newington, CT on 1 May 1965. Wayne Lewellyn Storrs died on 6 October 1976, in Willington, Connecticut, at the age of 85, and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Spring Hill, Mansfield, Connecticut. His wife, Lenore died 1 November 1978, in Willington, CT, age 85 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery. Wayne was a descendent of one of Mansfield’s oldest and leading families. (1) Samuel Storrs, the progenitor of the Storrs family in America and the son of Thomas and Mary of Sutton-cum-Lound, Nottinghamshire, England, was baptized on 7 December 1640, came to Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1663. On 16 December 1666, he married Mary daughter of Thomas Huckins in Barnstable, MA. She was baptized on 29 March 1646, and died 24 September 1683 in Barnstable. Samuel and Mary had six children: Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Samuel and Lydia. On 14 December 1685, he married widow Esther (Wood) Agard or Egard. Samuel and Esther had three children: Thomas, Esther and Cordial. About 1698, Samuel moved to Mansfield, Connecticut, where he was one of the original proprietors. He died on 30 April 1719 and his wife Esther died on 13 April 1730 and they were buried in Olde Mansfield Center Cemetery. (2) Thomas Storrs, son of Samuel and Esther (Wood) Agard or Egard Storrs, born on 27 October 1686 in Barnstable, MA moved to Mansfield with his father around 1698. On 14 March 1708, he married Mehetible Joyce. They had 11 children: Cornelius, Thomas, Prince, Josiah, Judah, Lemuel, Amariah, Mehetible, Rebeckah, Zerviah and Ann. He took quite an active part in Mansfield public affairs. He was town clerk, justice of the peace, and represented the town in the General Assembly for 43 sessions (1716-1748). Thomas died on 4 April 1755 and his wife Mehetible died on 10 March 1776. They were buried in Olde Mansfield Center Cemetery. (3) Thomas Storrs, son of Thomas and Mehetible (Joyce) Storrs, was born 16 January 1717 in Mansfield, CT. He was a farmer and married Eunice Paddock, daughter of Robert Paddock on 27 February 1743. They had nine children: Zeruiah, Martha (1745-1750), Dan, Eunice, Martha, Thomas, Seth, Zalmon and Heman. Thomas died on 14 May 1802 and his wife Eunice died on 2 May 1795. They were buried in Olde Mansfield Center Cemetery. (4) Heman Storrs, son of Thomas and Eunice (Paddock) Storrs, was born 27 September 1761 in Mansfield, CT. He married Alice Cummings on 24 March 1784 and they had five children: Thomas, Ralph, Irad, Eunice (Storrs) Ward and Nancy (Storrs) Boynton. For a period, Heman was engaged in manufacturing in Eagleville, but returned to farming in Mansfield. His wife, Alice died 13 October 1813 and he died 10 November 1846, both in Mansfield, CT. They were buried in Olde Mansfield Center Cemetery. (5) Ralph Storrs, son of Heman and Alice (Cummings) Storrs, was born 14 April 1786 in Mansfield, CT. He was engaged in the silk business, both as a grower and manufacturer and was also a butcher. On 14 January 1810 he married Orilla Wright and they had 5 children: Heman, Stedman Wright, Leander, Edwin and Mary Ann (Storrs) Marble. His wife, Orrilla died 8 March 1864 and Ralph died 27 February 1869, both in Mansfield, CT. They were buried in Hillside Cemetery. (6) Edwin Storrs, son of Ralph and Orilla (Wright) Storrs, born 16 March 1817 in Mansfield, CT was reared for farm work. He resided at home until his marriage and then purchased a farm adjoining the homestead. On 26 September 1838, he married Laura Wright, a native of Ashford, CT. They had one son, Ralph Wright Storrs. Edwin died 16 February 1870 and Laura died 5 April 1883, both in Mansfield, CT and were buried in Hillside Cemetery. (7) Ralph Wright Storrs, son of Edwin and Laura (Wright) Storrs was born 14 July 1839, in Ashford, CT, was reared for farm work. On 26 November 1861, he married Mary Adelaide Gurley, daughter of Ebenezer R. and Julia Ann (Gardiner) Gurley. He served during the Civil War in Company E, 22nd Connecticut Volunteers Infantry, as a private. Ralph and Mary had three children: Dr. Eckley Raynor Storrs, Lewellyn Jennings Storrs and Marion Storrs. In addition to farming, in the 1870’s he was engaged in the livestock business. He was active in town affairs, serving as town clerk for 14 years and as Judge of Probate for 19 years. After he resigned as Judge he held the office of Town Treasurer. His wife, Mary died 19 November 1896 and Ralph died 22 October 1904, both in Mansfield, CT and were buried in Hillside Cemetery. (8) Lewellyn Jennings Storrs, son of Ralph Wright and Mary Adelaide (Gurley) Storrs, was born 22 May 1868, in Mansfield, CT. He was the owner and operator of farm that his father built. His education was pursed in the district schools, with one year at the Natchaug high school, at Willimantic, graduating from the business department of that school in 1886. He then returned to the home farm, where he was successfully engaged in general farming and owning a free tract of 200 acres. On 22 May 1889, Lewellyn married Louise Gardiner, of Willington, CT, daughter of William and Louis (Church) Gardiner. Lewellyn and Louise had two children: Wayne Lewellyn Storrs and Bernice G. (Storrs) Knapp. He was president and treasurer of Willimantic Lumber and Coal Company, director of Willimantic Trust Company, trustee of Connecticut Agricultural College (now called University of Connecticut). He had taken an active interest in public affairs having been Registrar of Voters and Selectman several years and clerk and treasurer of the First Baptist Church of Mansfield, Judge of Probate beginning January 1901, taking the position his father had. He represented the town in the General Assembly for two sessions, 1905 and 1911. His wife died 31 January 1932 and Lewellyn died 19 July 1948, both in Mansfield, CT and were buried in Hillside Cemetery.
