Description	:	Services for Wayne Lowell Steeves, 79, were held this Thursday at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home at Bedford with the Rev Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at Memory Cemetery at New Market. He was in the Veteran Hospital at Omaha at time of his death on June 21 [1976]. Steeves, the youngest son of William M. and Etta E. Burial was at Memory Cemetery at New Market. He was in the Veteran Hospital at Omaha at time of his death on June 21 [1976]. Steeves, the youngest son of William M. and Etta E. Steeves, was born in Harlan Township, Page County, Dec 8, 1896. On July 15, 1935, he was married to Florence M. Pratt, who preceded him in death Jan 15, 1969. His father and mother and three brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Fern Owen of Clarinda and nieces and nephews. The family had moved to Taylor County in 1901 and settled in the Gravity vicinity where Wayne attended his first few school years at a rural school. In 1906 they moved to New Market where he was graduated from high school. In 1916 he was employed by the New Market Savings Bank. He served in the Army during World War I, and in 1919 he returned to the bank as cashier and served in that capacity until 1929. He was employed by the New Market and Clarinda Coal Companies for a period of 15 years. He held public offices including mayor of New Market, town clerk, township clerk, school secretary, treasurer of Taylor County and clerk of the district court. In 1951 he resigned as clerk and accepted employment with the office of the Auditor of State in the capacity of state examiner which he continued for ten years prior to his retirement in 1961. He had been a resident of Bedford since January 1945. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion, receiving 50-year certificates from both orders in 1968.
