Description	:	Wayne Surls was born March 8, 1924 in Iowa Falls, Iowa to Rev. Hampton and Freedia (Whitlatch) Surls. Wayne graduated from Iowa Falls High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific from 1943 through 1946 including the battles for the Philippines and Okinawa. While in the Navy, Wayne served on two LST's as a fire control officer. During his service, Wayne also played trombone in the United States Navy Band. Hampton and Freedia (Whitlatch) Surls. Wayne graduated from Iowa Falls High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific from 1943 through 1946 including the battles for the Philippines and Okinawa. He was discharged from the Navy in Minneapolis on March 20, 1946. Wayne married Avonelle Edith Meyer on February 12, 1946 in Iowa Falls. They made their home in Iowa Falls until moving to Alden in 1975. Following his military service he was employed by Ralston Purina in Iowa Falls as an electrician, the United States Post Office in Iowa Falls as a mail carrier, and Iowa Electric Light & Power Company as a Power and Substation Electrician Foreman in Iowa Falls. Wayne and Avonelle enjoyed traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. After he and his wife retired they enjoyed attending almost all University Of Iowa football games, including both home and away for many years. Wayne was a member of the Iowa Falls United Methodist Church, and of the American Legion. Wayne is survived by a son Russell and his wife DeAnn of Iowa Falls; a sister Donna Grupe of Salem, Oregon; grandchildren Christopher Surls of Mount Vernon, Daniel Surls and his wife Christy of West Des Moines, and Rebekah Clark of Iowa City; 3 great grandchildren Joshua Clark, William Surls, and Alden James Surls. He was preceded in death by his parents Hampton and Freedia Surls, his wife Avonelle, and a brother Jerry Surls.
