Description | : | Weltha A. Babcock was the first and only child of Oscar D. and Weltha A. Nelson Babcock. Weltha (apparently originally "Wealthy") was common name among the Bushnell family at least from the mid-1700's. Weltha Nelson's mother, Prudence, was a Bushnell. Little Weltha Babcock lost her mother when she was only one day old, apparently a childbirth-related death. In July 1862, the elder Weltha's sister, Sophia, was going to take the baby back east to be brought up there, and they boarded a ship in San Francisco, bound for New York.
