Graveside Services for Jack were Wednesday, August 31 at Wessington Cemetery followed by Memorial Services at First Presbyterian Church in Huron. Jack was born to Joy and Lois (McNeil) Duxbury near Wessington, South Dakota, on February 11, 1938. Named Wendell at birth, his older brother, Bob, declared to their parents that he was going to call the baby Jack. And he was Jack from that moment on. He grew up on the family farm near Wessington. Jack and his siblings enjoyed many 4-H activities, including showing Hereford cattle and competing in judging contests. He also participated in several high school sports, including baseball, during which he severely injured his knee, which ultimately was replaced in his later years. He graduated from Wessington High School in 1956 and went on to South Dakota State College where he earned a degree in Animal Science and was a member of award-winning livestock judging teams. His first job was a Field Man for the SD Hereford Association. He judged livestock competitions across the state for many years. He married Shirley Orr on June 15, 1958, and they had three children. They returned to the farm near Wessington and worked with his father and brother. He was active in church, township boards, and Masons. Jack also served on the Wessington School Board for many years and Jack and Shirley supported all the school activities throughout their children's school years. This love of sports continued through Jack's life. He followed the high school sports teams in every town he lived in and held season tickets for the SDSU men's basketball team for a few years. He was also an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. In 1985, Jack and Shirley moved to Tripp, SD, where Jack became the Hutchinson County Agriculture Extension Agent. They lived in Tripp for two years before moving to Madison to serve Lake County in the same capacity. Jack enjoyed the many 4-H activities including taking “his” kids to the State Fair and trips to Louisville, KY, and Washington, DC. After Jack became the supervisor for the Southeast District, they moved to Mitchell, where he finished his career and retired in 2002. Jack and Shirley moved to Huron in 2003 and had the opportunity to attend the activities of the next generation; including many hockey games and calf shows. If he was unable to attend an event, he would listen on the radio or watch it on TV or the computer. If a game was on, he was listening, even if that meant multiple radios going and the TV remote in hand to “watch” multiple games at once. He also watched live streams of cattle sales on the computer. In 2013, he won a trip to a Twins game through a radio contest and was able to see the Twins play at the new Target Field. Jack was often seen around Huron attending auctions and rummage sales. He was known for buying boxes of “stuff” at auctions and enjoying time sorting through the “treasures.” He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons Paul (Chris), Wessington, and Doug, Huron, daughter, Barb (Royce) Meritt, Harrisburg, SD; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Joyce (Gene) Rowen, Waconia, MN, and Jean (John) Lakner, Rockwell, TX; sister-in-law, Rose Ann Duxbury, Wessington; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
