Wendell LeRoy Johnke was bornNov. 6, 1919, near Lennox to Carl "Buster" and Anna Kathryn (Nuftbrook) Johnke. He received his early education in rural schools and graduated from Lennox High in 1937. He attended Freeman Academy. He served in the U.S. Coastguard during WWII aboard destroyers escorting convoys and hunting submarines in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. On May 10, 1944 he married D. Delores Nussbaum while on leave in Ellensburg, WA. After receiving an honorable discharge from the military, the couple made their home south of Lennox for three years until moving to the current family farm north of Lennox. After the death of his wife Delores on Dec. 17, 1998, Wendell continued farming until suffering a stroke in 2004 and was forced to move to the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Wendell was a member of First English Lutheran Church and Brethorst- Burma American Legion Post #174. Wendell enjoyed raising livestock and watching crops grow. He enjoyed playing bingo at the Lennox Legion, dancing and visiting with friends. Wendell valued education for his sons, because he was forced to withdraw from college for lack of funding during the Great Depression. Wendell passed away at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the age of 90. Besides his parents and wife, Wendell was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard (Swede) Johnke and a sister, Marceen Golder. Left to cherish his memory are his two sons: Dennis Johnke and his wife Ann of Royal, IA and Delwin Johnke and his wife Jennifer of Lennox; six grandchildren: Neil Johnke (Jaci), Mankato, NIN, Alisa Johnke, Augusta, GA, Chris Billups, Melissa Billups, Angel Bretthauer and Hailey Johnke, Lennox; and many other friends and relatives.
