Wendell William Strike was born February 18, 1893 and passed away April 20, 1927 at the Mercy Hospital in Anamosa, Iowa. Failing to survive an operation for appendicitis, performed the previous Thursday. A graduate of Iowa State College at Ames, he had gone to Anamosa as the County Agent for Jones County, to take the position in December 1925. While pursuing his college training, he enlisted in April, 1917, with the Ames Ambulance Corps, and served for a part of the war on the Italian front, taking part in the last great offensive there. He returned to the U.S. in the spring of 1919, completing his educational requirements and graduating from Ames with the class of 1920. On October 25, 1922 he was married to Buena Payne at Tulia, Texas. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his departure his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Strike, of Nashua, Iowa; three sisters: Mrs. S. J. Fairbanks of Waterloo, Mrs. Colonel Borglum of Republic, and Miss Dorothy Strike of Nashua, and teacher in the public schools of Jesup, Iowa; one brother, Oliver K. Strike of Tulon, Illinois; together with a host of other relatives and friends. He was a member of the Black Hawk Lodge A.F.&A.M. No 65 of Cedar Falls, and while at Ames a member of the Acacia Masonic Fraternity. Speaking of his fellow-townsman, the editor of the Anamosa Eureka says: "Mr. Strike was a young man evincing strength and vigorous health, and this sudden termination of a life of energetic service in early manhood brings deep sorrow to a large circle of friends throughout Jones County, who had learned to respect his ability and liked the man for his pleasing personality and congenial companionship". Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Methodist Church at Nashua, Iowa, in charge of Rev. A. Raymond Grant. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette composed of Mesdames Johnson and Taylor and Rev. McCorison and August Meier, accompanied by Mrs. Grant. Burial was in Greenwood, the Masons having charge of the service at the grave and the American Legion firing a salute over the grave and sounding taps. The following tribute to the deceased was given by the Farm Bureau of Jones County, the president of the Bureau, Mr. Henry Morey, accompanying the body to Nashua. The sudden death of W. W. Strike at Mercy Hospital, Anamosa, Wednesday afternoon, April 20, following an operation for appendicitis on Thursday, April 14, was a severe shock to the farm and city people of this county with whom he had been closely associated since December, 1925, as County Agricultural Agent. Mr. Strike was known throughout the county as a conscientious and willing worker and his genial disposition made him liked by all with whom he came in contact. His work as County Agent here was outstanding. The past year he had 129 Junior Club members, enrolled in five clubs, and had set up a thorough organization which made possible a very successful Home Project. Two cow test associations were organized through his efforts, and a large number of other projects were completed. His plans for 1927, which were well under way, included an even broader field and betokened a most prosperous year for the Farm Bureau in Jones County. Mrs. Strike was most enthusiastic about his work and sacrificed much of his time and energy for it. During his short illness his thoughts turned much to the work he had planned so carefully, and he looked forward eagerly to his return to it. The farm people held him in highest esteem. His place will be most difficult to fill. For four years prior to coming to Jones County, Mr. Strike was in the Soil Survey Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. This work took him and his wife, who accompanied him, into many states... For four years prior to coming to Jones County, MR. He was a veteran of the World War, seeing overseas service on the Italian front, with the first ambulance detachment that went from Ames on the entrance of this nation into the World War. He was decorated for bravery by the Italian government for his services there. At the close of the war he returned to Iowa State College and finished his college course, graduating from the soil department in 1920. While there was a member of the Acacia fraternity. At Cedar Falls where he attended college, prior to going to Ames, he was a member of Delta. MR. STRIKE was member of the American Legion and the Masonic association.
