Description	:	Wendlen P. "Pete" Hager, 81, a longtime Anaconda resident, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Fort Harrison from complications of a stroke. Pete was born Oct. 2, 1924, to Joseph and Rosenna (Bleile) Hager near Orrin, N.D. He was number eight in a family of nine children. "Pete" Hager, 81, a longtime Anaconda resident, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Fort Harrison from complications of a stroke. Pete was born Oct. 2, 1924, to Joseph and Rosenna (Bleile) Hager near Orrin, N.D. He was number eight in a family of nine children. He bore his chore of plowing with the horse and mule and growing up in the Great Depression. In 1944, he joined the Army and served in Okinawa. After the war, he returned to his home in North Dakota and worked on the railroad for several years. In 1954, he met Edna Mehl, the love of his life. They married on Oct. 31, 1955. Shortly after, they moved to Anaconda and resided at 818 E. Sixth St. He worked for the Anaconda Co. Smelter in many "dirty" departments until his retirement in 1983. During strike periods he worked for Deer Lodge County at the cemetery and fought fires. He also worked at the Berkeley Pit in Butte. They adopted two boys, Donald in 1962 and Ronald in 1964. After retirement, Edna and Pete had an opportunity to enjoy traveling and attended family functions in California, Washington, North Dakota, and Minnesota. They attended to each other's needs until 2001, when his beloved Edna died. Pete's final years were spent in Butte with his son, Don. His family and those who knew him best would attest to his hard work ethic, truth, willingness to help, and his love of the dice game "blow it." His stories of growing up and events in his life he told vividly and could fill a folk album. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rosenna Hager; son, Ronald; wife, Edna; brothers, Ben, George and Louie; sisters, Regina, Elizabeth, and Barbara; and an infant brother who died at birth. Survivors include his son, Donald and wife Susan of Butte; sister, Helen and husband Elmer Kroll of Lodi, Calif.; grandsons, Casey Hager, Buena Park, Calif., Jammison Todd and family of Kalispell, Jeremy Todd and family of Bigfork; great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Megan, Colton, and Shannon, all of Kalispell; nephew, Terry Hager of Anaconda; nieces, Mary Ellen and husband Toby Crisler of Opportunity, Rose and husband Dean McCarter of Lost Creek (all close special relatives). Other special nephews are Wayne, Charles, and Bob Radamacher, all of North Dakota and their father Clarence Radamacher (brother-in-law), Larry Hager of Vancouver, Wash., George and Sharon Frye family of Bismarck, N.D.; nieces, Dorothy and Ernie Fin of Underwood, N.D., Arlene and Larry Arndt family, Underwood; special nephew, Daryl Hedyt and wife Sandy of Bismarck; special sister-in-law, Anne Mary Bose of Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews in North Dakota; and special friends in Anaconda and the Western United States. In the last two years, special friends, Joe Tonkovich, Ron Schafer and Shannon "Buck" McMullen helped greatly with his care. He's one of the "Elite Last" of a generation of tough individuals who knew what hardship and sacrifice for family was all about, and for God and country they served. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Longfellow Finnegan Funeral Home with the parish vigil at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Peter's Church.
