Wesley E. Thomas, son of Mrs. Joseph Thomas of Sioux City, and former Ireton residents, was killed in action in Germany April 1 while serving with the 47th infantry division of the United States First army. His widow, former Lois Jensen, and a 15-month-old daughter, Carol Anne, who reside at Wall Lake, his mother, Mrs. Joseph Thomas, and a brother, Clifford of Elgin, Ill., survive. He was 29 years of age. He was married in August, 1941. A graduate of the Morningside college conservatory of music in 1938, and after completion taught in public school for three years in music at Ocheyedan. He entered the service July 7, 1942, and received medical corps training at the Hondo, Tex., air base. Only recently he was transferred to the infantry and went overseas the latter part of February, 1945. ----------------------- From the Sioux County Capital, May 3, 1945 SERVICEMEN IRETON: Killed in Action Ireton: Sgt. Thomas, who was killed in action in Germany on April 1, while serving with the 9th Infantry Division of the First Army, was born on a farm north of Ireton on March 11, 1916. --------------------------- From the Thursday, May 3, 1945 Hawarden Independent: Sgt. Wesley E. Thomas, who was reported killed on April 1, 1945, was born on a farm north of Ireton on March 11, 1916. He was a son of Mrs.Joseph Thomas of Sioux City. He moved to Sioux City with his parents and was graduated from East High and Morningside college. Before entering the service he was working on his Masters degree in music at the University of Iowa. He taught in the public schools at Ocheyedan four years. Ha was united in marriage with Lois Jensen of Wall Lake on August 5, 1941, and to this union was born one daughter, Carol Anne, who with the wife survives him. He is also survived by his mother and one brother, Clifford Thomas of Elgin, Ill. ------------------------------- From the Thursday, January 27, 1949 Hawarden (Iowa) Independent: Last Rites for Sgt. Thomas Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Tarrell(Mrs Tarrell (Bertha (nee Thomas) was a cousin of Wesley via his father, Mr Tarrell was his uncle (brother of his mother) attended the funeral services for S/Sgt Wesley E. Thomas at Wall Lake Tuesday. Sgt. Thomas, a former Ireton resident, was killed in action in Germany April 1, 1945, while serving with the 47th infantry division of the First army. He was 29 years old. He was a graduate of East high school in Sioux City, a 1938 graduate of the conservatory of music at Morningside college. Following his graduation he taught music in the public school at Ocheyedan for three years. He entered the service July 7, 1942, receiving his medical corps training at Hondo, Texas. He went overseas in February, 1945. He was a member of the Grace Methodist church of Sioux City. Survivors are the widow, Lois Thomas; a daughter, Carol Ann of Wall Lake; his mother, Mrs. Nellie Thomas of Sioux City, and a brother, Clifford, of Sioux City. He was married in August, 1941.
