Wessie Monroe Jarrell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Jarrell was born in Shelby Co., Mo., April 30, 1884; died May 13, 1901, after 9 weeks illness, aged 17 years, 13 days. He leaves father, mother, one brother, three sisters, his two aged grandmothers, and many relatives and friends to mourn his death. He united with the Christian church in a protracted meeting held by Bros. Munyon and Elliott on the night of Oct. 4, and was baptized Oct. 5, 1900. His relatives and friends watched anxiously and patiently by his bedside, but to no avail. The Death Angel came and touched the pale sufferer with his icy fingers, the eyes were closed and his spirit took its flight to God who gave it. He was a good, kind boy and loved by all who knew him. He bore his suffering patiently and was surrounded by the family when he died. The funeral took place at the home on May 14 at 9:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Munyon, in the presence of a large audience. Burial at Shelbyville in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. And while our young brother is so sadly missed we would say to the bereaved ones, trust in the Lord and some bright day we will meet him who so quietly and peacefully passed away. Dear Wessie is gone, forever gone, His mission here on earth is done; We scarce can think he's passed away So sweet, so mild, so brief his stay. Since within the grave we laid him Happiness from home has flown, Life seems strangely dark and dreary And the days have longer grown. But you who watched around his bed And tried to lengthen life's short thread, You realize that death has come And borne one of your loved ones home. We know the loss is great to you For he was gentle, kind and true, God is too wise to err you know And knew 'twas best that he should go. When our life on earth is ended We shall meet him over there, For the angels claimed our brother And vacant stands his chair. Home is not home for Wessie is not there-- Angels have taken him out of our care, Dark is the room and vacant the chair-- He's gone to that home so peaceful and fair. Death has robbed us of our brother And the angels have him now. Where no pain or death or sorrow Comes to cloud our brother's brow. O'er his grave the birds are singing In the sunlight sweet and free. But they can not bring our loved one Back to us, sweet Wessie dear. ---A Friend.
