The late Mr. Vaughn said ...the house in which he lived..at first had eighteen rooms, but the owners of the place before he lived there had cut out several of the rooms, as ‘no family could be found that was big enough to fill it’. The work of burning the brick was begun in 1806 and was finally finished in 1808. The brick for the building...were burned on a ‘clayey spot’ not far from the mansion. The lumber for the structure was sawed from a part of the immense wooded tract embraced in the farm that a great deal of the unskilled labor was done by employees of Jones, but that “Jones paid his skilled workmen $1.50 per day and two meals, dinner and supper thrown in.”...he never killed less than 30 hogs each fall that had been chiefly fattened on mast, acorns, chestnuts, etc., from his woodlands...Jones would never kill his ‘mast-ed hogs’ until he had fed them on corn for a month to make the meat solid and firm. Hog-butcher-times at the Jones home were great events... The old brick mansion...was the center of a great deal of merriment for the younger set...They gathered there in great numbers for dances and other festive occasions...many of his kin-folk living in Washington and Alexandria...each fall time the old farmer with his ‘coon and possum ‘ dogs...often accompanied by any number of his male employees, spent entire nights pursuing wily coons up and down Jeremy’s Run or other water courses on his plantation. On one occasion when his coon dog ‘Ted’ died he had all activities to suspend on his plantation while the burial of ‘Ted’ was going on. Wharton Jones would often make horseback trips from one end of his plantation to another, taking two days for a round trip. He gave instructions to his tenants how much land he wanted in wheat, rye, corn, oats, etc., telling the tenants to take so many thousand yards steps east, west, north and south, to designate the size of the field he wanted in a certain crop. Each tenant had some kind of a stable in which to take care of the horses that were needed in cultivating different crops. On the same tract of land once owned by Wharton Jones there is probably today anywhere from one to two hundred small farms. James R. Wood said that his father often told him he saw as many as 75 or 100 men cutting wheat with reap hooks, and cutting corn with home made corn cutters. The wheat was threshed out by flails and wooden floors that had been placed on level spots on different parts of the farm. Horses were also used in tramping out the wheat or rye on these improvised floors. Women, for hours sifted through their hands the wheat grains from the chaff. Later Jones ran the wheat through some kind of old fashioned fans. After the different piles of wheat had been gotten together it ran into volumes aggregating fifteen thousand and twenty thousand bushels. At one time, Mr. Wood said, Jones had no fewer than five can mills at different places on his farm, supplying homemade molasses to families at fifteen and twenty cents per gallon. Buckwheat was also one of the big crops...Jones was reported to have been unusually kind to his regular employees, and those who worked for him. Milk and butter free of cost were furnished them from Jones thirty or forty cows. The meals of the tenant families in winter time, breakfast in particular, were composed of buckwheat cakes, rye, coffee, and ‘slab meat’ midlings but for them they were feasts fit for kinds[sic]...there were so many apple orchards...that his ‘drinking friends’ after much persuasion caused him to have an apple distillery ‘up near the Adam Ponn farm’ and it is known that Adam also had one of the same kind of enterprises on his farm, the ‘Carolotta’ estate. But in all fairness it must be stated, “Wharton Jones was not cut out for a drunkard’, being careful to whom he sold a gallon or half a gallon of apple brandy at the rate of 75 cents per gallon. Realistically, it appears that what liquor Wharton Jones sold was for what he believed to be ‘medical purposes.’
