He died on January 1, 2021, at the Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City, Iowa, having attained the age of 93 years. Wilbert Louis “Poody” Doering was born on November 4, 1927, to Fred H. and Elsie (Dubberke) Doering on the home place south of Hubbard. Wilbert was baptized on December 18, 1927, by Pastor Holdsen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbard. He was confirmed on March 29, 1942, by Pastor John Schliepsiek. His confirmation verse was John 14:6. “I am the way and the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Wilbert was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served various offices in the church. On September 17, 1949, Wilbert Doering and Janet Schwinger were united in marriage at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church by Pastor Theo Yackel. They farmed south of Hubbard until 1989 when they moved to town. Poody and Janet enjoyed 27 years wintering in Apache Junction, AZ. Poody especially enjoyed playing softball many of those years in Arizona. He was always up for a game of cribbage. Poody and Janet moved to Windsor Manor, Webster City, Iowa, in May of 2018. Survivors include his wife, Janet; four sons, Stephen ( Diane) Doering of Webster City, Mike (Brenda) of Hubbard, Craig (Linda) of Ames and Larry (Lynn) of Hubbard, and foster son, Bob Carel of Fort Madison; eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and nine step grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Linn, and brother, Arvene (Nancy), of Hubbard and sister-in-law, Lou Doering of Iowa Falls. He was preceded in death of by parents, Fred (1968) and Elsie (1988), his brother, Harry Doering (2009), sister, Elaine Thompson (2019), brothers-in-law, Leonard Thompson (1997) , Howard Linn (2020), Wallace Schwinger Jr (2009), nephews, Ron Doering (1995) , and Mark Schwinger(1991) and niece, Suzi O’Brien (2019).
