Wilbur was born on July 27, 1923, in Madrid, Iowa, to Vilmer F. and Ina Helen (Hoffman) Benson. He attended Luther and Madrid schools. Wilbur served in the Army in Europe, being awarded all five bronze campaign medals, including D-Day at Normandy, and Battle of the Bulge. Read More	Wilbur Dean Benson, 91, passed from this life on Monday, December 29, 2014, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Wilbur was born on July 27, 1923, in Madrid, Iowa, to Vilmer F. and Ina Helen (Hoffman) Benson. He attended Luther and Madrid schools. Wilbur served in the Army in Europe, being awarded all five bronze campaign medals, including D-Day at Normandy, and Battle of the Bulge. On June 7, 1942, he was united in marriage to Virginia Mae Swain in Princeton, MO and to this union, three children were born. Following WWII, Wilbur and Virginia made their home in Madrid. After 40 years, he retired from Firestone Tire in Des Moines. Wilbur loved his family and our country. He enjoyed spending time antiquing, camping, working in his garden and taking care of his yard. Wilbur was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend; he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 72 years, Virginia Benson of Madrid; two sons, Richard (Linda) Benson of Luther and Wayne (Karen) Benson of Madrid; daughter, Roxana (John) Ellison of Luther; brother, Marvin (Doris) Benson of Sheldahl; and six grandchildren, Brian Benson, Brad Benson, Brandy (Doug) Neys, Leana (Ethan) Hersch, Clayton (Carrie) Benson and Mikaela Ellison. Wilbur was preceded into eternal life by his parents; and two sisters, Betty Cronk and Mary Jane Brundage.
