Wilbur Dwight "Nick" Hammerlun Jr. was born July 14, 1943 to Wilbur Dwight and Opal (Boshart) Hammerlun in O'Neill. He graduated from O'Neill High School in 1961. While in High School, Nick was active in FFA and liked to show cattle. After graduation, he worked on the family farm. Nick married Alpha Grimm on July 20, 1963, and to this union three children were born: Patti, Peggy, and Nicklas. Tragically, on June 25, 1976, a traffic accident north of O'Neill took Alpha's life. The next day, June 26, 1976, Patti Renae, 12, passed. On July 2, 1976, Peggy Kay, 10, passed away and on December 10, 1976, Nicklas John, 8, joined his mother and sisters. After enduring the loss of his family, Nick joined the Peace Corps and worked in Equidor. After returning to O'Neill, Nick met Lucille Schulte at a Parents Without Partners group. They married on September 13, 1980. Nick adopted Lucy's two children; Lisa and Mike. Nick worked for the City of O'Neill for almost 20 years before retiring in 2009. After retirement, he drove school van and owned Hammerlun Monuments, where he sold cemetery monuments. Nick was a member of First United Methodist Church in O'Neill, Compassionate Friends, Jaycees, and Freemasons. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, baking, cooking (especially inventing new recipes), spending time with grandkids, and dressing up as a clown or Santa Claus. Nick is survived by his wife, Lucy Hammerlun of O'Neill; two children, Lisa (Keith) Hart of Wiggins, Colorado, Mike (Sara) Hammerlun of O'Neill; 5 grandchildren, Jared Hammerlun, Maddox Hammerlun, Samiya Hammerlun, Shelby Hart, Britney Hart; his brother, John (Carol) Hammerlun of O'Neill; his sister, Pam (Dick) Larsen of Fremont, Nebraska; many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Nick was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alpha and children, Patti, Peggy, and Nicklas; and special nieces, Nichole Bennett, and Emily Reiser.
