He died suddenly, in his apartment at Stoney Brook Village in West Union. Wilbur was born November 6, 1925 to Rupert and Lytle (Steefer) Nading in Littleport, Iowa. Wilbur’s father died in a farming accident when he was five and his mother remarried Ernie Brockmeyer. Wilbur was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and served with the 17th infantry. He trained at Fort Snelling and served proudly as a Military Policeman for eighteen months in Seoul, South Korea. On November 16, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, Wilbur was united in marriage with Doris Schmidtke of Oelwein, Iowa. God blessed this union with three children. Wilbur and Doris spent the next twenty-three years as dairy farmers in the Hazelton, Stanley, and Oelwein area. During this time he also owned and operated a livestock trucking service. In 1972, Wilbur and Doris moved to Elgin and purchased the Park View Tap. They owned and worked in this business for seventeen years. They enjoyed camping and had a place on the river at Big River Campground in Prairie du Chien for over thirty years. This was a favorite for all the grandchildren and Grandpa loved sharing his love of the outdoors, and especially his love of fishing with each one of them. Another favorite of Wilbur’s was decorating his house for the Christmas season. He would put up thousands of lights and play Christmas music for the enjoyment of anyone who wished to drive by. Of all the things Wilbur did in his ninety years of life, he would tell you his best years were spent behind the wheel of a “Big Yellow School Bus”. For thirty-five years he drove bus for the Valley Community School District. Every student was special and he took personal responsibility for their safety and welfare. In January of 2013, shortly after Doris’ death, Wilbur moved to Stoney Brook Village in West Union. He very much enjoyed the residents and staff and quickly became close to all who knew him. He leaves behind to honor his memory, son, Terry (Judy) Nading of Oelwein; son, Larry (Carole) Nading of Elgin; and daughter, Cindy (Gary) Butikofer of Elgin; one brother, Franklin Brockmeyer; three sisters-in-law, Doris (Tony) Nading, Dorothy Schmidtke, and Dorothy Willingham; nine grandchildren, Jodi (Jason) Meyer, Jenny (Joshua) Dearborn, Jessie (Jason) Henry, Scott (Maryna) Nading, Mackenzie Nading, Dawn (Cody) Halverson, Cory (Lori) Butikofer, Misty LaPlant, and Tony Butikofer; sixteen great-grandchildren, Tyler, Makaela, and Jacob Meyer; Dakota, Emmalee, Hunter, and Brookelynn Henry; Madelyn and Isabella Dearborn; Macy and Tessa Halverson; Allison Butikofer; Kaylee LaPlant; Rylin Butikofer; Nolan McKenna; Charlotte Nading; and a host of other family and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; parents, Rupert and Lytle; stepfather, Ernie Brockmeyer; two brothers, Tony and Richard; one sister, Mildred; granddaughter, Nicki Jo Nading; and a great-granddaughter, Kara Meyer. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 16, 2016 from 4-7 pm at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Elgin Lutheran Church with Pastor Rusty Phillips as the Officiant. Burial will follow at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa. Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
