Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Katherine Bullard officiating. Burial is at the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84. Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home with Masonic services by Lebanon Lodge 323 A.F. and A.M. at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation continues Friday from 9-10 a.m. at the church. Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Clearwater to Roy E. and Emma M. (Reimer) Johnson. He attended school in District 60, Antelope County, Clearwater High School and Norfolk Junior College. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1935 with a bachelor of law degree. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and the Order of the Coif, an honorary legal fraternity. After his admission to the Missouri State Bar, he opened a law practice in Kansas City and served for eight years as an attorney for the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. He married Jean A. Browder Sept. 5, 1937, in Albion. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II from 1944-46. He was enrolled for training at Princeton and Harvard University and was a communications officer on several troop transports in convoy duty on the Atlantic. He was also a legal officer at the U.S. Naval Disciplinary Barracks near Norfolk, Va. He moved to Columbus in 1946 and opened a law office in the Maxwell Building. In 1949, he formed a law partnership with Judge Louis Lightner. He held memberships in the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the Platte County Bar Association, the Kansas City Bar Association, the Sixth Judicial District Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. He was the associate editor of the Nebraska Law Bulletin from 1934-35, Columbus police judge from 1947-51, acting Platte County judge from 1959-72 and Columbus city attorney from 1961-65. He was a member of the VFW, Lebanon Lodge 323 A.F. and A.M., and other Masonic Orders, First United Methodist Church, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the building of the First United Methodist Church sanctuary, and an adult Sunday school teacher for 30 years. He was a former chairman of the Platte County Chapter of the Red Cross. Survivors include a son, Vard (Ruth Purtilo) of Omaha; a daughter, Jamie (Richard) Snyder of Columbus; a sister, Winifred Kaminson of Neligh; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1986; and a sister, Zella Ward. Memorials are suggested to the church.
