His funeral will be Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church in Redfield. Reverend Bob McHenry will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. He attended school at Redfield and graduated from Ashton High School in 1944. Wilbur joined the United States Army and served his country from 1945-1946 as a medical corpsman. After his honorable discharge, he returned to farm in the Frankfort/Redfield area until 1978. On November 25, 1978, he married Myrtle M. Lapke and they made their home in Redfield. Wilbur was a member of the Wesleyan Church and was employed at South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield until 1986. He then worked at James Valley Nursing Home until 1994. In 1996, Wilbur and Myrtle moved to Sioux Falls and Wilbur worked at Covyington Heights Nursing Home until 2004. His hobbies included crafts, playing cards and spoiling his step-grandchildren. He enjoyed sewing and quilting, making many gifts for his kids, grandchildren and others. Wilbur is survived by his wife Myrtle of Sioux Falls, 14 step-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren, two nephews: Calvin Herold of Las Cruses, NM; Virgil Polak of Watertown, SD; three nieces: Margie Polak of Sioux Falls; Linda Schroeder of Redfield; and Rita Soulek of Garretson, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Berniece Polak, his brother Ray, two step daughters: Marlene Ford and Hollie Leesch and a step son James Akin.
