She was born on Aug. 16, 1914, in Fernald Township, Iowa. She married Howard A. Wolf on April 12, 1942. He died in 1955. She graduated from Fernald (Iowa) High School and attended Joplin Junior College, in Joplin, Mo. She moved with her husband to Marshall in 1954 and after his death attended Bish Mathis Institute in Longview, graduating in 1956. Prior to her marriage, she worked as an assistant county auditor in Story County, Iowa. She worked from 1960 until retirement in 1975 for Thiokol Industries as an administrative clerk and production planner. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi during her career years. She moved to Lubbock in 1975 and was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the Episcopal Church Women and a past member of the Altar Guild and Intercessory Prayer Team. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall and at St. Christopher's. Wilda Wolf April 17, 2020—Wilda Wolf, devoted mother, grandmother and Sunday school teacher, died on Oct. 1 , 2000, at the age of 86. "Total loving acceptance," John Wolf, her only son, when asked to describe his mother in three words. "Kind, gracious, giving," said her daughter-in-law Carole. Born on Aug. 16, 1914 in Fernald Township, Iowa and the youngest of seven children, Wilda was in high school when her father lost their family farm during the Great Depression. This experience would instill in her the ability to work hard and maintain a positive outlook throughout her life. Wilda worked as an assistant county auditor in Story County, Iowa, until she married Howard A. Wolf on April 12, 1942. Their son John was born on Sept. 29, 1943. While her husband worked as a scientist for the war effort, Wilda maintained her status as a housewife. They then moved to Marshall, Iowa in 1954. After the shocking death of her husband from a heart attack in 1955, Wilda went back to school at Bish Mathis Institute in Longview, Iowa, and graduated in 1956. Though a widower at the age of 41, Wilda worked as a single mother to provide for her only child, John. In a time when it was not normal for women to work outside of the home, Wilda did so graciously and with a happy heart. She was never mean and never had an unkind word for anyone, Carole said. "If she was talking about someone, you can be sure that it was positive things," John said. After working from 1960 to 1975 as an administrative clerk and production planner at Thiokol Industries, Wilda retired to Lubbock, Texas, to be closer to her son and sister, Sylvia Holcomb. "I think my favorite times, memories of her were when she was happy and people were doing something for her like when the kids were over there," John said. "I think the other thing is too is when she was with some of her family. When she could remember and could sort of experience family because she did not get to do that very much." After moving to Lubbock, Wilda became very involved with St. Christopher's Episcopal Church and became a member of the Episcopal Church Women and a past member of the Altar Guild and Intercessory Prayer Team. She was also a longtime Sunday school teacher both at Trinity Episcopal Church back in Marshall and at St. Christopher's. Her time in Lubbock also gave her the opportunity to build closer relationships with her two grandchildren, Allan and Anne. "She could make the ordinary exciting," Anne said. "We did lots of regular things that would become fun to do. Wrapping Christmas gifts was an event, making Jell-O was an event, playing super simple games while at her house, picking what syrup you got for breakfast that morning. Everything was special." The most memorable and unique aspect of Wilda was her laugh, whether it was at herself or along with others. "The thing I remember the best is Grandma's laugh … that little chuckle that was uniquely hers that I will never forget," Anne wrote in a collection of memories published about Wilda. And her legacy continues on in the lives of her children and grandchildren today. They still carry on her tradition writing hints for each Christmas gift to give clues as to what is inside. "We still make her famous chocolate angel food cake for birthdays and special occasions," said Anne. "Family meals and preparing people's favorite dishes were a big part of who she was. Sunday night dinners consisted of fried chicken and beets for me and green beans for my brother, Allan." Wilda is survived by her son, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
