The immigrated to the United States as steerage passengers aboard the SS Oder, arriving in New York on February 28, 1881. Wilhelmine Just was born June 3, 1856 to Frederick and Augusta Just. Emil and Wilhelmine, both from Hainichen, Germany; were married August 20, 1877. The immigrated to the United States as steerage passengers aboard the SS Oder, arriving in New York on February 28, 1881. They lived in Indiana for two years before coming to New Salem with the earliest settlers. Shortly after their arrival, their son Emil died of diphtheria on May 12, 1883. This was the first funeral in New Salem. He was buried Northwest of town at a location that later became the rodeo grounds since a location for the Cemetery had not yet been determined. The family moved on to their Homestead NW Quarter of Section 12, Township 139, Range 85 in June 1883. Some years later a 12 x 14' sod edition with a sod roof was added to the frame structure. In 1890 the house had four windows, four doors, three rooms, a pine floor, and a cellar. Tragedy struck the John family on July 20, 1911. Mr. and Mrs. John with sons Richard and Fritz where in New Salem because the traveling circus was in town. There was to be a dance that evening so the rest the family stayed in town while son Richard went home in the buggy to do the farm chores. The farm house caught on fire and Richard was burned to death. After the fire, the family moved to the 300 block of six Street in New Salem. Later they moved to Mandan and then returned to New Salem. Emil John died June 20, 1936 and his wife followed him on November 4, 1942. They had five children. Son Emil was born January 3, in 1878 in Germany and died at age 5 on May 12, 1883. William was born September 9, 1882 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, married Freda Schellenberger April 5, 1908, died June 24, 1945. His family is detailed in a separate article. Wilhelmine Lena (Lena) was born October 28, 1885, married George Vollrath December 17, 1907, died at age 99 on February 19, 1985. Children: George 1908 - 1990, Mathilda (Tilly) 1910 - 1956, and Albert 1916 - 1982. Emil Richard (Richard) born April 3, 1891, died July 20, 1911. Frederick Emil (Fred or Fritz) born August 14, 1895, married Lilly Just May 28, 1924, died August 20, 1965. Children: Oscar John, born 1925, married Linda Lou Carlisle.
