Thanks to Jane Marie Morrison for providing the following obituary: Clayton County Journal, IA, Friday, May 3, 1907, P5 Death of a Pioneer At the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Schoulte, of Read township, on Friday, April 26th, 1907, occurred the death of Wm. Kann, one of the pioneer residents of our county. Mr. Kann retained his health and faculties to a marked degree and was sick but about five day before death came. William Kann was born in the Rhine province of Prussia, Germany, April 17, 1822, and reached the age of 85 years and 9 days. He came to this country during the winter of 1847 and in July of that year came to Jefferson township, Clayton county, and has lived in this county continuously since that time. He farmed in Jefferson township until about ten years ago and since that time has lived with his daughters, Mrs. W. P. Uriell and Mrs. Herman Schoulte. He was married in 1848 to Maria Schnerbrock, who died nine years ago. Ten children were born to them of whom the following five are living; F. W. Kann of Jefferson tpw., Mrs. Katherine Schoulte of Read twp; J. J. Kann of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Anna Uriell, of Read twp; H. W. Kann of Jefferson twp. Funeral services were held at Garnavillo Monday, Rev. Raedler officiating. Interment was in Jefferson township at the Kann cemetery, near the old church, now abandoned, in which the family worshipped for many years. In the death of Mr. Kann Clayton county loses one of its respected pioneer citizens, one of the men whose life if interwoven with the history of the county and by whose hard work the foundation of the wealth and growth of our county was established. -- Elkader Argus.
