One sister stayed in Germany The 160 acres home place of William Schwarze was bought in 1891. It was sold to Carl & Ida Schwarze in 1912. Randolph Schwarze bought the land after that. There was also 20 acres William bought for firewood in 1883. Carl bought 10 acres of it with Randolph inheriting it and sold in 1973. Louis bought the other 10 acres and was sold in 1941. Fredrich Schultz bought 160 acres of land in 1893. Upon his death, in 1901, Mena Schultz & Carl Schultz & John Schultz inherited the land. In 1903, they sold the land to Wm Schwarze. In 1903, Louis Schwarze buys the south 80 acres and in 1919 Louis buys the north 80 acres. Upon Louis & Ida’s death, Esther Schwarze Wedemeier & Raymond Schwarze inherit the land in 1941. Raymond buys Esther half of the land. In 2006, after Ray & Bernita deaths, Crop land sold, Different stories told to me by various people: Wilhem didn't want to serve in the German Army so he stow-awayed on a ship in an apple barrell. Took 3 months to cross. Almost out of food, the captain started to ration the food. He worked for a farmer that grew vegetables. Borrowed money from him to send back to Germany to bring his wife and two kids over. He had to work for the truck farmer for eight years to pay back the loan. He was a bricklayer in Germany. He did cement work in U S. Mixing it by hand. Story about William Schwarze as he told it to Pauline Teter: William had a sponsor to bring him to America. He worked for a dairy farmer near Chicago. The dairy farmer liked William right away so he advanced enough money to William to bring Louisa and Emma to America. William wrote to Louisa and told her that he brought milk into Chicago every day and goes pass the train depot and she should wait for him there. One day not long after, he was sent to town to pick up the dairyman's daughters who had been in town shopping all day. They came over to him with a baby and told William they wanted to take the baby home. He wanted to know whose baby it was and where they got her, etc. By that time Louisa couldn't stay away any longer and came rushing into his arms for the great reunion. He worked for the dairy farmer for quite a while until he had enough money to buy a farm near Chicago. Article from Bremer County Independent paper, Waverly William Schwarze, 87, died March 12, of a paralytic stroke. He came to this country from Germany in 1866 and to Bremer County in 1874. The funeral was held at the home of his son, Louis Schwarz, with whom he made his home, and at St John's Lutheran church of which he was a member. Rev E A Hanff officiated and burial was made in St John's cemetery southeast of town, beside his wife who preceded him in death about eighteen years ago. He leaves three sons and five daughters: Louis and Charles of this place, Edward of Lancaster, Wisc. Mrs Wm Lenius and Mrs John Prestien of Tripoli, Mrs. Wm Westendorf of Fairbank, Mrs. Louis Pries of Bremer, Mrs. Laurie Malte of West Valley, NY. There are 35 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. I received this Article from Emaline Wilharm: William Swartz was born in 1846 in Germany. There he married Louisa Fisher and they had one child. In 1867 he learned that he would have to go to war and fight in one of Germany's small wars for a cause he didn't believe in. He decided to leave Germany for America, but was forced to leave his family behind until he had earned enough money. During the night he then left Germany. He came to America in a sailing boat. During the trip it was real stormy and the boat went backwards almost as much as it went frontwards. The passengers became afraid of running out of food and started to complain. The captain said that if they didn't shut up, they could eat coal. After seven weeks they reached New York finally. William had only three pennies left in his pockets. For awhile he worked in a brick yard and then went to work for a farmer. The farmer helped William out by advancing him wages, so he could send for his family. She and the child came over in a steamer which took only three weeks. In 1868 they moved to Illinois, near Chicago. In 1870 they went to Iowa and farmed until he retired and they then moved to Tripoli in 1907. They had a total of nine children. WILLIAM SCHWARZE BURIED SUNDAY Pioneer Citizen Dies at the Home of His Son Louis Last Wednesday Night William Schwarze, 87, well known citizen of Bremer county and pioneer resident of Douglas township, died at the home of his son, Louis, late last Wednesday night, March 12. Death came as the result of a stroke of paralysis suffered several days previous. William Schwarze was born February 28, 1843, in Bostel, Hanover, Germany. His early boyhood and manhood days were spent in that country where he received his education in the public and religious schools. He was confirmed at the age of 15. June 11, 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Fischer. To this union were born 11 children. One little son and two daughters, Mrs. August Kuker, and Mrs. Frank Heckel, preceded him in death. In the year 1866 he came to the United States. About three months later his wife followed him . They made their first home in Cook County, Illinois. There they lived for 12 years. In 1874 they moved to Bremer county, Iowa, where they bought a farm in Douglas township, on which they lived for 33 years. In 1907 they moved to Tripoli. In 1912 his wife preceded him in death. For a few years he kept house for himself, until in 1917 he had the misfortune to fall and injure his hip. Since that time he made his home with his son, Louis, on the farm northwest of Tripoli. Mr. Schwarze had always enjoyed good health. About two weeks ago he was privilege to celebrate his 87th birthday with his family, which he enjoyed very much. March 4, he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He attained the age of 87 years, and 12 days. He leaves to mourn, five daughters, Mrs. Amelia Lenius, Tripoli; Mrs. Louise Malte, West Valley, N.Y.; Mrs. Alvine Pries, Bremer: Mrs. Minnie Westendorf, Fairbanks: Mrs. Amanda Prestien, Tripoli,: and three sons, Louis and Carl Schwarze, of near Tripoli and Ed Schwarze of Lancaster, Wisconsin: 35 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren: one sister Mrs. Minnie Droste of Waverly: besides other relatives and friends. Mr. Schwarze will be missed by his children and relatives, especially by his grand-daughter, Esther, who was always ready and willing to help and serve him. He was a hard working and conscientious man, always ready and willing to extend a helping hand. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran church, a kind father, a good friend and neighbor. Funeral services were held at the St. John's Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, Rev. E. A. Hanff, officiating. Burial was made in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery, southeast of town.
