Nov 1, 1906 - Carroll Times - The sudden death of William Thomassen at his home in this city on Wednesday of last week, October 24th, 1900, was briefly noted in our last issue. He was a native of Bislich, Kr. Rees, Regb. Dusseldorf, Germany, born Sept. 23, 1837. He served in the Prussian army as private in the 17th royal infantry and was one of the veterans that defeated Austria in 1866 and before whose valor the French colors went down again and again in 1870-71. February 27, 1856, departed was married to Miss Matilda Intveen and they came to this country in 1880. To them were born six children. Of these two died in infancy. Mary died at Carroll, Iowa, in 1888. The surviving ones are Gertrude, Mrs. M. Gross, Uniontown, Wash.; John, Colton, Wash.; and Minnie, Mrs. Henry Egan of this locality, who with their mother mourn the early death of their beloved parent. Wm. Thomassen of Brunswick, Neb., nephew of deceased, was in attendance at the funeral, which took place Saturday from SS. Peter and Paul's church in this city. There was a large attendance of neighbors, friends and acquaintances, for the family was highly esteemed and they have the warm sympathy of their friends in their sorrow. The departed was of that sturdy honesty and upright manly character that is so desirable a factor in the citizenship of this country. Would that as high a testimonial for virtue could be as generally given as friends do to this departed. The bereaved ones feel sincerely appreciative for the many acts of kindness given and the expressions of sympathy extended by their numerous friends and acquaintances. May the benevolent Father of all assuage their grief and soothe their spirit with the balm of His heavenly consolation.
