Wilhelmine married Emil Schmeling on November 22, 1889. In 1892, Emil, Wilhelmine and their children Olga and William came to the United States and established their home in Emmetsburg. They moved to Whittemore in 1900.They farmed two miles northeast of Whittemore, and for a number of years farmed the half section in Lotts Creek township now owned by Ben Hanson. In 1892, Emil, Wilhelmine and their children Olga and William came to the United States and established their home in Emmetsburg. January 10, 1926 - Last day of Wilhelmina Schmeling as told by Herbert Schmeling "The Schmeling family now lived on a half-section - seven miles north and one mile east of Whittemore, Iowa. There was snow on the ground outside, but the house was snug and warm. For some reason, there were only Emil, Wilhelmina, Herbert, Walter, and Otto at home. After a nice dinner - the mother decided the chimney or rather the stove pipes should be cleaned so that the cook-stove would heat better. Along about 4:30 PM, Wilhelmina stood on top of the stove helping Herbert with the removal of the pipes. Suddenly, the mother danced and twirled. This made Herb laugh gleefully. Herb says he'll never forget that afternoon as long as he lives. "Wilhelmina's health had been Poorly" for about ten years - going through the menopause. During that time Herb and his mother had become very close as he had kept the house up, besides his own chores. Well after supper, Emil, Wilhelmina, Herb, Walter and Otto went to see neighbors - the George Winkle family who lived about a half-mile from the Schmeling farm. They had only visited a few minutes when about 7:30 or a bit later, they decided to play Pinochle. Just as they started to play, Wilhelmina called softly to her huspand: "I think we had better be going - I feel that I'm about be paralyzed". She was rubbing her hands together trying to feel. "Let's call the Dr. quick" someone suggested. "No, said Wilhelmina - It's too late". The Dr. soon arrived and taking in the situation with a glance, he asked for help to take Wilhelmina still in her chair into his car. They were at the Schmeling place within minutes and as they carried Wilhelmina through the doorway - her slurred speech was so bad they couldn't understand what she was saying. Immediately after being put on her bed, she became comatose. The other children were all notified. Olga rushed down from Minnesota, but their mother never regained conscience. Monday after - Wilhelmina was dead. Irwin and Herbert went to the Lutheran cemetery to dig her grave. There was snow and ice everywhere on Wednesday when the boys went about their saddened work."
