Description	:	Award of Silver Star. Private First Class Willard A. Jones, Infantry, Company G, 28th Infantry Rregiment, for gallantry in action on 29 August 1944 in the vicinity of Brest, France. When his company was cut off and surrounded, an enemy tank entered the field occupied by Company G and commenced moving around the field, spraying foxholes with machine gun fire and calling for the company to surrender. Jones, Infantry, Company G, 28th Infantry Rregiment, for gallantry in action on 29 August 1944 in the vicinity of Brest, France. When his company was cut off and surrounded, an enemy tank entered the field occupied by Company G and commenced moving around the field, spraying foxholes with machine gun fire and calling for the company to surrender. Leaving his place of cover, Private Jones ran 75 yards over the open field, jumped onto the tank and attempted to knock it out by stuffing hand grenades through the apertures. Although seriously wounded before he could finish his task, the heroism and extreme devotion to duty displayed by Private Jones reflect the greatest credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Florida. Private First Class Willard A. "Bill" Jones lost one third of his right arm, left eye, one lung, and the index finger of his left hand. He was picked up by the Germans in the line of fire and kept in a hospital for several months before being sent back to the states.
