The Commercial Appeal says of the deceased: "Mr. Burroughs was born 45 years ago in Shelby county, Mo., where he grew to young manhood. He was educated to become a lawyer and in 1895 was licensed to practice law in Missouri. In 1903 he entered the accounting department of the United Railways of St. Louis. In March, 1905, he came to Memphis as secretary- treasurer of the Memphis Street Railway Company. Since coming to this city, Mr. Burroughs has made many friends and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was prominent as an Odd Fellow and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Burroughs is survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Bessie Burroughs, and two brothers, B. C. Burroughs of St. Louis, and H. M. Burroughs of Vinita, Okla. After a funeral service conducted by the Odd Fellows at the parlors of Norris & Co., the body was forwarded last night to Shelbyville, Mo., for burial, accompanied by Mrs. Burroughs, Miss Bessie Burroughs, C. B. Proctor of the Memphis Street Railway Company and Mrs. Maud Williams, his secretary. Shelbina Democrat (Shelbina, MO), 1918-08-28, page 1, column 2 W. H. BURROUGHS W.H. Burroughs died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, Wednesday of last week, after an illness of less than 24 hours of kidney trouble. He formerly lived at Shelbyville and was there engaged in the practice of law. About sixteen years ago he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and in a short time became secretary and treasurer of the Memphis Street Railway Company, a position he held at the time of his death. He was about 45 years old at the time of his death and was a soninlaw (sic) of C. S. Gunby, of this city. The deceased was a man who was held in high esteem by all who knew him and at the funeral services held at Shelbyville Friday several paid tribute to his memory. He leaves a widow and one daughter. The interment was in the Oddfellows cemetery at Shelbyville.
