Ohm passed away early Monday morning, Jan. 14, 2013, at Kossuth Regional Medical Center in Algona. Willard Herman Ohm was born May 10, 1929, at his parents' Palo Alto County farm home two miles northwest of Fenton, Iowa. He was the son of Edward Carl Ohm and Viola Albertina Ida Schmidt Ohm and was the youngest of three children in the family. His older sister and brother were Isabelle and Gordon. His grandparents, William and Lena (Lieb) Schmidt and Herman and Maria (Behrens) Ohm, were pioneers of German descent who settled near Lotts Creek in Kossuth County, Iowa. Willard was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fenton on May 26, 1929. His sponsors were Arnold Lieb and his aunt, Clara Ohm Pompe. The family moved from the farm near Fenton to a farm southeast of Ringsted and Willard attended first and second grades at a country school east of Ringsted. They moved to a farm between Fenton and Lone Rock. Willard attended a country school for the first half of his third grade year until the school closed. He then attended Fenton Elementary School and St. John's Parochial School in Fenton. He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in 1943. Also in 1943, the family moved into Lone Rock. Willard attended high school in Lone Rock, graduating with the class of 1947. The winter following graduation, Willard and a friend worked at a packing plant in Omaha. Gordon had returned home from serving in World War II and was in Omaha attending radio school during this same time. Willard served in the U. S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He was stationed on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, as a military policeman and later as a member of the Hawaiian Armed Service Police. Following his discharge, he returned home to Lone Rock and worked for Kossuth County. During the 1950s, he and his friend Bob Marlow and his cousin Jim Buss took several road trips, including a trip to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and a trip to the Los Angeles area where Isabelle and her family were living. He also took his parents to California to visit Isabelle and her family. In 1956, he began working for W. Hodgman and Sons in Fairmont, Minn., doing road construction and worked for them until he retired in 1989. After he retired, he continued to make his home in Lone Rock, living in the same house for almost 70 years, until he suffered a heart attack on Oct. 11, 2012. Following hospitalizations in Mason City and Algona, he became a resident of the West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Fenton, a member of the Kerr-Hammerstrom Legion Post in Lone Rock, where he served as commander for several years, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Armstrong. He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Ohm, in 1973, his father, Edward Ohm, in 1976; his sister, Isabelle Ohm Hanna, in 1973; and a nephew, Alan Hanna in 1955. He is survived by his brother, Gordon Ohm and his wife Gertrude of Arnolds Park, Iowa; four nephews, Michael Ohm of Okoboji, Iowa, Darwin Hanna of Hemet, Calif., Daryl Hanna of Corona, Calif., and Bryan Hanna and his wife Debbie of Temecula, Calif.; three nieces, Georgia Hanna Toliver of Los Angeles, Calif., Ginger Hanna Costa of Long Beach, Calif., and Valerie Hanna Carnahan and her husband Patrick of Torrance, Calif.; seven great nieces and nephews, Jeremy Hanna, Sandra Hanna, Michael Costa, Kevin Costa, Sydney Carnahan, Ashley Carnahan and Sterling Toliver; and a host of other relatives and friends, all of whom he held dear.
