Description	:	WILLARD HOWARD CHURCH The only child born to John Lee and Adelia "Dea" (Merrick) Church. Received his education in rural school district No. 49 and 50 and attended C.C.C.H.S. (Columbus) and also Pittsburg High School one year. Was on the Columbus Football team in 1910 and 1911. Married Mettia Jane (Dorsey) Church on Nov. 29, 1916 Mettia and Howard owned a Restaurant in 1917 and 1918. Farmers from 1919 to 1921. Owned and engaged in the general merchandise and Grocery Store business and Postmaster 1921 to 1933. Served on the board of education for several years. Owned and engaged in the general merchandise and Grocery Store business and Postmaster 1921 to 1933. Served on the board of education for several years. Pleasant View Township, Lawton, Cherokee County, Kansas Opened the New Deal Used Furniture Store in 1932. Sold his store in Lawton and moved to Columbus on 25 Jun 1934 where he opened The New Deal Used Furniture Store in which he was still engaged at the time of his death. Known throughout Kansas for his activities in the Anti-Theft Association #199 serving as president of the Lawton Lodge member since he was 21 years old. - Served the last two years as state vice president and a member of the executive board and was in line for the state presidency of the organization. A worker in Politics, Lodge Work, both I.O.O.F. and A.T.A. IOOF Lodge no. 476 (Crestline, Cherokee Co.) and in City Affairs such as the Chamber of Commerce. Serving as county secretary. Served as city Assessor of Columbus the past two years President of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Last 5 years of his life. Member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Crestline and the Methodist Church. Cause of death was enlarged/Heart Problems at the age of 46. In failing health for seven years and ill, bedfast the last three weeks. Died at home. Funeral held at the Methodist Church. June 23rd. Rev. Alphon Goodrick, pastor of the Christian Church of Galena and Rev.O. C. Johnson pastor of the Bethleham Church, both former pastors of Lawton Church will conduct the services. Conducted by Jones-Ruhland undertaker. Pallbearers - C. J. Pruyn, Farette Rowe, Ed Swanson, and Charles Armstrong of Columbus. Noel Fulweiler of Riverton, Dean Marshall of Baxter Springs, Lee Sandberg of Weir and George Bailey and Charles Loucks of Crestline. Music furnished by a male quartet, composed of Henry Hamlet, Billy Hamlet of Columbus and Mr. Coe and Mr. McQuire of Galena accompanied by Mrs. G. R. Wallace.Songs were "Going Down the Valley, One by One", "Asleep in Jesus" and "Some Day We Will Understand". 24 girls acted as flower girls, all cousins or close friends. Buried in Old Pleasant View Cemetery - 5571 NE 85th St Rural Cemetery located NW of Lawton, Pleasant View Township, although it's mailing address is Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas 66762
