Hugunin 75 years of age, died suddenly Thursday evening, April 28, at his home one and a half miles east of Spencer. Mr. Hugunin had not been ill and did not complain of feeling poorly. He had been actively at work about his farm when he was suddenly stricken. Death was instantaneously. One of the extensive landowners of Clay county and a resident here for almost half a century, Mr. Hugunin was well known in all sections of the county. He evinced an interest in public affairs of his community and he was counted among the sturdy pioneers who had aided in developing Clay county. Willard Nye Hugunin was born at Johnstown, Rock county, Wisconsin, November 23, 1856, and moved from Johnstown to the township of LaPrairie near Janesville, March 16, 1867. He was educated at the district school and other schools in Janesville. He taught one term of school in LaPrairie, Wisconsin, the winter of 1877 and 1878, later clerking. During the years of 1878 and 1879 he was deputy express agent at Lanesboro, Minnesota. In the fall of 1879 he began work for the American Express company as messenger and as such was a pioneer running into the following towns when the road was first built: Blue Earth, Minnesota, Watertown, South Dakota, Huron, South Dakota, and Pierre, South Dakota. In 1882 he resigned from the employment of the Express company and in the spring of the year came to Clay county, Iowa, where he located on the farm where he has since made his home. He was united in marriage to Lydia Huckell in Sioux township, Clay county, November 1, 1888. To this union seven children were born. A son, Willard M., died March 7, 1924. He is survived by his wife, his sons and daughter, Victor N. of Spencer, Guy J. of Salt Lake City, Utah, Ivan V. of Jackson, Minnesota, Ethel of Des Moines, John W. of Chicago, and David H. of Spencer; seven grandchildren and othr relatives. The Reverend B. J. Trickey was in charge of the services held Monday. A prayer service was held at the home at eleven o'clock Monday morning and services were conducted at the Cobb-Phelps Funeral chapel at two o'clock Monday afternoon. Pall bearers were James King, Frank Pullen, A. H. Rhodes, Dave Snyder, E. W. Brinkley and Virgil Dennis. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
