On May 12, 1913 the family Olthuis arrived on the S.S. Corsican from Liverpool at the port of Quebec, Canada. They first settled in Edmonton, where his father Jacob built a small shack on city land. Little sister Eerlandje got ill and died there in August 1913, 7 months old. On June 20, 1914 a second sister was born, again called Eerlandje (Eva). In April 1915 they moved to the Dutch agrarian settlement of Neerlandia, founded in December 1911 by 12 Dutchmen, and located in the central part of the Canadian province Alberta. In 1916 Willie Olthes (8 years old, born in Holland), his father Jacob Olthes (35, Holland), his mother Alice (31, Holland), and siblings John (10, Holland), Fred (5) and E?rlandze (2, Alberta, Canada) were living in district Edmonton West, Township 62 [this is Neerlandia], Alberta, Canada. After only three years on their farm in Neerlandia the Olthuis family returned to Edmonton. During their stay in Neerlandia the fourth son was born on May 7, 1917, Jan Gerrit (George), Find A Grave Memorial# 70224426. Sister Gerritje (Carrie) was born on February 5, 1919 in Edmonton, and soon thereafter the family of eight moved back to the homestead on their quarter (of a square mile, 160 acres) in Neerlandia. On May 17, 1922 the last sibling was born in Neerlandia, Aaltje (Alice). See Find A Grave Memorial# 148533553 On March 11, 1934 Bill married in Neerlandia at the age of 25 years the three years younger Carrie (Gerritje) Tuininga, born in the Dutch northern province of Friesland. The brothers John, Bill and Fred Olthuis filed each on a quarter in Neerlandia, which they patented in 1927, 1934, and 1937. Bill was the family hunter and trapper. The pelts and skins of weasels, muskrats, and squirrels obtained by him, were shipped and sold. Bill was the only member of the Olthuis family who remained as farmer in Neerlandia; the others, like his parents, moved mostly to Edmonton. Bill died in July 1992 at the age of 84 years in Barrhead, located about 24 kilometers south of Neerlandia. His widow Carrie died there too, in May 2005 at the age of 93 years.
