Fight Growing Out of Old Grudge Results in Death for Both Men. Occured in Dante, Va. ~ Called to the undertaking establishement of the Gaffney Furniture Company Friday afternoon by friends who suspected the truth, Mr. W.E. Allison recognized the dead body of his son, William, which had been shipped here from Dante, Va., under the name of Charles Mosely. William Allison, who was twenty-four years old, had been away from home for more than two years. His father is a substantial farmer who lives about two miles from Gaffney on route three. ~ William Allison came to his death by gun shot wounds inflicted by Charles Sherrill in a fight in Dante Wednesday morning about half past eleven o'clock. Allison also killed Sherrill. Allison was shot five times, once through the head, three times through chest and once entirely through his body, the bullet having entered one arm and come out the other. Sherrill was shot twice, dying about thirty minutes after the affair. The fight was the result of a long standing grudge between the two men. ~ Mr. G.G. Phillips, a boarding house proprietor of Dante, with whom Allison boarded, brought the young man's body home. No word of the affair had been received in Gaffney until he arrived with the corpse on Southern train number 12, Friday afternoon. ~ In talking of the affair Mr. Phillips said that Allison, or Mosely as he knew him, had been in Dante about a year, during which time he worked in the shops of the C.C.& O. railroad. He enjoyed the reputation of being a quiet, industrious, likeable young man. Sherrill, according to Mr. Phillips, was a blockade distiller. ~ On last Wednesday morning Sherrill went to the shop where Allison was working, and beat him up severly, using a steell pipe. Young Allison then went to his boarding house, secured a gun and returned to his shop. In the meantime, Sherrill had been looking for him twice, and returned a third time within a few minutes. As soon as he appeared in the door Allison drew his gun, but upon the first attempt it hung fire, giving Sherrill an opportunity to draw his. The two men opened fire simultaneously, Sherrill being struck twice and Allison five times, killing the later instantly. ~ Allison had told Mr. Phillipss a part of his personal history, including that his home was in Gaffney. Mr. Phillips, having been friendly with the young man, had his body prepared for burial and brought it to Gaffney. Upon arrival it was carried to the Gaffney Furniture Company's store, where a great many people went to look at the dead man. As soon as the casket was opened a number of people remarked the resemblance of the corpse to William Allison, and many were so positive as to his identity that it was decided to send for his father. ~ Sheriff W.W. Thomas went to Mr. W.E. Allison's home and brought him here to Gaffney. The father recognized his son immediately, with the exception of a front gold tooth in his mouth which caused a slight doubt until Mr. Phillips informed him that this had been secured while the young man was in Dante. ~ William Allison is survived by his father, three brothers: Messers. John, Smith and Landrum, and two sisters: Mrs. Nancy Jane Allison and Mrs. Sam Blanton. He had been married but his wife died about two years ago. ~ The body of the young man was buried in Providence church cemetery Saturday afternoon. Rev. C.W. Payseur conducting the funeral services.
