Description	:	William was born Ju 23, 1850 near Pleasant Plain, Jefferson County, Iowa to Caleb Bales and "Ibby" Bray. At Age 14, he was too young to join the Union forces in the Civil War, so he lied about his age and enlisted under the name William Shaffer at Burlington, IA, Mar 29, 1865 into Co. K, 7th Iowa Infantry. His fighting was short lived as on Jul 12, 1865 they were mustard out at Louisville, KY. Later on, his Veteran home records all say William Bales (alias Shaffer). At Age 14, he was too young to join the Union forces in the Civil War, so he lied about his age and enlisted under the name William Shaffer at Burlington, IA, Mar 29, 1865 into Co. His family moved to Warren County, Iowa. He married Mary Jane Rodgers Jun 2, 1883 in Des Moines. They divorced at some point before 1893, and he ended up in Dixon County, Nebraska working as a sign painter, a profession he appeared to do his entire life. Aug 28, 1893, he was united in marriage at Martinsburg, Dixon County, Nebraska to Aria Ethel Roberts who was 27 years his younger. They lied about her age on their marriage license saying she was 18, but she was really 16 and he was 43. This marriage did not last and by 1899 they were divorced. On Jun 14, 1899, Ethel remarried to Louis Stoeffler. Over the next 20 years, William lived in different Veterans homes, from California, to Tennessee, to South Dakota, and he ended up at the Veteran's home in Marshalltown, IA where he died, Apr 3, 1924 at the age of 73. He was buried in the Riverside Cemetery the following day. His death certificate says "Probably Acute Alcoholic Poisoning." He is not to be confused with an older William Bales who ironically also served in Co. K, 7th Iowa Infantry between 1862-1864. This William Bales was born 1842 and died in 1911 in Kansas and is buried there. I am not sure if he is a relative to William A. Bales or not. There was also a 3rd William Bales of Tennessee that died in 1933 that was a soldier and he too has been confused with this William Bales.
