Description	:	The sudden and unexpected death of William A. Cooney occurred May 8, 1944, as a result of a heart attack. He was born August 10, 1872, at Tremont, Illinois, the son of James and Margaret Cooney. With his parents he moved to Jackson County, Kansas, in February, 1884, the family purchasing the farm of the late Jerry Simpson, five miles south of Holton on Highway 75. Read More	The sudden and unexpected death of William A. Cooney occurred May 8, 1944, as a result of a heart attack. He was born August 10, 1872, at Tremont, Illinois, the son of James and Margaret Cooney. With his parents he moved to Jackson County, Kansas, in February, 1884, the family purchasing the farm of the late Jerry Simpson, five miles south of Holton on Highway 75. Will was a student of St. Benedict’s College at the age of 16, graduating from the commercial course at 18. He taught school for ten years in this county, giving up the profession to become assistant cashier in the Mayetta bank. In February 1908 he became cashier of the First National Bank of Mayetta. He performed his duties in that capacity until two days before his death. While essentially a banker, he engaged some in farming and was thoroughly familiar with the problems of agriculture. With a sense of strict integrity and unquestioned honesty in his dealings, Will Cooney performed a unique service for his community over the forty years of his residence there. His judgment and advice were often sought by his fellow citizens in their personal affairs and his time and efforts were always available for any worthy civic or community effort. He is not only missed but is sincerely mourned by all the people of this community. He was married to Carrie Newlin of Wetmore, Jun 26, 1907, and she survives him. To this union were born two daughters, Rachel Margaret Walker and Charlotte Rosemary Robson. The grandchildren are William Lee, Rosemary Ann, and James Patrick Robson; John Louis and Margaret Ruth Walker. Funeral services were conducted Thursday May 11, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Mayetta, Rev. Fr. Ryan officiating, and burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, west of Holton. The active pallbearers were Francis Slattery, Martin Fielder, James McCauley, Wm. Slattery, Mike Hogan, and James Fitzgerald. The honorary pall bearers were Mr. Cooney’s fellow bankers, M.G.
