Pastor Norman Prather officiated with burial in Greenwood Cemetery at Creighton. He died Friday, May 2, 1008 at Lincoln. William Albert Hopkins, son of George Allen and Thelma G. LaBorde Hopkins was born April 28, 1925 at Neligh. He graduated from Neligh High School with the class of 1942. November 19, 1943 he entered the US Army and took basic training in Cook and Bakers School at Camp Roberts, CA. In August of 1944 he was shipped to Hawaii for several months and then joined the 165 Infantry Regiment, 27th Division on the New Heberdies Islands. On April 1, 1945 he participated in the invasion of Okinawa. After the surrender of Japan in August of 1945, he was shipped to Japan as part of the army of occupation. He was honorable discharged as a staff sergeant on April 17, 1946 at Fort Douglas, UT. After discharge he attended Norfolk Business College in Norfolk. February 8, 1948 he was married to Bonnie Jean Shupe at Neligh. Four children were born to them, Marjorie, Lynda, Vicki and Michael. June 1, 1949 he joined Consumers Public Power District, which later became NPPD at Neligh. He later transferred to Elgin, Wausa and Creighton in 1970. He retired from NPPD January 31, 1990. While in Elgin, he served as Chamber of Commerce president, served as village treasurer for eight years, was co-chairman of the Elgin Diamond Jubilee in 1964 and served on the fire department for 12 years. In Wausa, he served as chamber chairman and, in Creighton was involved in many areas. He served on the Creighton School Board from 1978-1989, was the co-chairman of the Creighton 100 years anniversary celebration, served on the Creighton Housing Authority from 1989-1994, was a past Chamber of Commerce president, past post commander of the American Legion Post #74. past commander of VFW Post #1151 and was the mayor of Creighton from 1994-1998. Bill was a member of United Church of Christ in Creighton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lina Milne in 1974 and twin great granddaughters, Alexis and Aaliah Kock in 2000. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; two daughters and their spouses and one son; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Alvin and two sisters, Barbara Hughes and Lois Sprout.
