The base of the Gore Moument still exists but unfortunately, the joint headstone is missing. Zatto & Ginny gave birth and raised 14 children on Beech Creek, Alf was their 4th child. They owned 270 acres on Beech Creek which included part of what is now Sharples and all of Monclo that had been patented by Joseph Gore (1780- 1868, Zatto's grandfather who was born in New Market, VA & Married Martha Pine)after his arrival in Logan (then Wyoming County, VA) Book 2 page 47) Zatto raised hogs on Beech Creek where they fed on acorns & beech nuts. He also carried the mail from Sharples to Lyburn, WV(which is a small town located between Logan & Man on the Guyandotte River. Zatto gave Logan County Board of Education the land where the old wooden Sharples High School Was built. (The school set on the hill on the left side of the road as you left Sharples going toward Blair) In later years billions of dollars of coal were mined from Beech Creek by others, starting with Boone County Coal Corp. Mining continues to this day taking coal from several hundred feet below the creek bed. As a young man, Alf crossed over the mountain from Beech Creek and down Isom Fork, at Lake, WV, and attended a church service. The church set at the mouth of Isom, this is where Alf met Bertha Baldwin, daughter of Fielding Baldwin and Prescilla Estep Baldwin. They married and gave birth to 11 children in their log cabin on Missouri Fork (previously called Aint's Creek)of Hewett's Creek, Boone County, WV. The cabin set in the upper end of a bottom at the foot of the mountain where this cemetery is located. The road to this cemetery starts up the hill about 100 ft above where their cabin set which is shown in the background of William Alfred Gore's photo enclosed. Alf and Bertha established the Gore Cemetery in November 1911 after the death of their one-year-old son, Theodore Clyde.
